A photo that shows Alicia and Randy Atkins's baby about to be born, grabbing a doctor's finger as she is pulled out of her mother's womb during a Cesarean section surgery, has gone viral online after the parents posted it to Facebook.
According to Gawker, the photo is the first viral picture of 2013.
The Daily Mail reports that Alicia Atkins of Glendale, Arizona, gave birth to a baby girl, named Nevaeh, after a Cesarean section on October 9. Her husband Randy, witnessed the incident and snapped a photo of the baby grabbing hold of the doctor's finger as she entered the world.
3TV News reports Randy said: "The doctor called me over and said, 'Hey, she's grabbing my finger.' So I ran over there and just grabbed the shot and I was just in awe looking at it. It was such an amazing picture." According to 3TV News, Randy said he was nervous as he rushed to snap to photo because he was afraid of missing the moment.

The photo shows the infant about to be born but with her finger poking out of her mother's womb and grasping the doctor's finger as though trying to pull herself out of the womb into life.
Gawker reports that Alicia, Nevaeh's mother, is a professional photographer who owns the Glendale-based A Classic Pin-Up photo studio. She posted the photo to the company's Facebook page on December 26, with the caption: "This was 10 weeks ago when I was having my c-section and Dr. Sawyer broke my water and my daughter reached up out of my stomach and grabbed the Dr.'s finger and my hubby caught this special moment."

According to 3TV News, Alicia posted the photo three months after the incident because she was unsure how people might react. But the photo went viral immediately it was posted to Facebook, now with over 3,000 likes, 1,500 shares and hundreds of comments.
She was surprised that people reacted to the photo favorably. She told "We didn't think we were going to get such positive feedback. We thought we would get more negative 'that's disgusting,' [Instead] everybody just thought it was the best thing in the world."
The Daily Mail reports she added: "Truly amazing. I am in awe of this photo. Something to remember forever."
Baby Nevaeh ("heaven" spelled backwards) is now 11 weeks old.
Some reactions to the photo:
"That is quite moving like she's saying 'hello, nice to meet you'. What a lovely emotional keepsake for her parents."
"What an AMAZING thing to be captured on film!!!! To think and put this into perspective, that very doctor's hand that she is squeezing, FROM the womb of her mother, was once itself a tiny little hand inside HIS mother's womb. Gotta admit, the whole miracle of birth is astonishing....that we start off as these microscopic cells and turn into living, breathing, thinking, human beings ;-) So cool."
"What a great moment to catch. A new life reaching out to enter the world. How precious."
"She's greeting the doctor!"
Nevaeh, who has two older siblings, is reportedly doing well.
