The name of the rapist-murderer who brutally assaulted and burned alive Zoe Dalaklidou in the Greek town of Xanthi has been revealed as Christos Papazoglou, 27. His confession has appeared in the Greek media.
In the early hours of Thursday morning Christos Papazoglou, who is variously described as both Austrian and Greek, attacked 34-year-old Zoe Dalaklidou as she put her key into the door of her parents' apartment building. What followed was a heinous crime.
Police immediately suspected the murderer must be someone who knew the victim by sight. Papazoglou, who had been incarcerated for five months this year on rape charges, had boasted he would sue the "State for unjust imprisonment and would get great compensation" after he was acquitted, Ta Nea reported.
His conviction for attempted rape brought Pagazoglou to police attention. Evidence quickly piled up against Pagazoglou. His fingerprints were found at the crime scene and the victim's personal belongings found in his home. After 12 hours of interrogation Pagazoglou confessed to the crime, saying he chose his victim at random.
He followed her two blocks to her home as she returned from a night out with a friend. He said "So I came and I did. I knew it. I liked it. I saw before me randomly and followed. Attacked when put the keys in the door. Would recognize me, so I burned it. "
More than 3,000 mourners attended Zoe's funeral on Friday. More than 300 people attempted to lynch her murderer when he was arrested.
