article imageIs 'One Pound Fish' the next 'Gangnam Style?'

London - A song-and-dance YouTube video starring a Pakistani fishmonger has been viewed nearly 8 million times, raising speculation that the tune could be the next massive global viral video hit.
Muhammad Shahid Nazir's "One Pound Fish" has become a huge hit in Britain, reaching number 29 on the UK pop charts and no doubt surprising the, ahem, artist who immigrated to England last year to provide a better life for his wife and four young children back home.
Nazir, 31, arrived at Heathrow Airport with little more than a dream to live what he calls the "London Dream." But Nazir could never have imagined he'd become a celebrity in his new home. Especially not when he landed a job selling fish at a stall in Queen's Market.
"On my first day at the market my boss said, 'You have to shout,'" Nazir told the Evening Standard. "At first I sung 'One pound fish,' straight from my head. The next day I added, 'Come on, ladies.'"
A hit was born:
Come on, ladies! Come on, ladies!
One pound fish!
One pound fish!
Hava hava look!
One pound fish!
Hava hava look!
One pound fish!
Very very good!
One pound fish!
Very very cheap!
One pound fish!
"Everyone came and said, 'it's very catchy, you should be a pop star,'" Nazir said. "People came from America, Canada, everywhere, wanting my autograph and not buying fish unless I sung. I feel special. I think I'm watching a dream and someone will touch me and I'll wake up."
Nazir's star soared after Timbaland and Alesha Dixon covered his unlikely hit. He scored a record deal, and he even auditioned for "The X-Factor." Alas, the judges clearly didn't see what 8 million YouTube viewers saw and he didn't make into the mix.
Inevitable comparisons to Psy's "Gangnam Style," the most viewed YouTube video of all time (1.04 billion views and counting) have dogged Nazir as his video racks up views by the millions. But Nazir hadn't even heard of Psy or his song, the biggest hit in the world in 2012, until people kept mentioning the two of them in the same breath.
For all his newfound fame, Nazir says the thing he wants the most is for his family to join him in London.
"I got a marriage proposal from a woman on Twitter but I miss my wife," he told the Evening Standard. "I spoke to my family and the kids said, 'please come back,' we are missing you, papa."
It looks like they'll soon get their wish. Nazir's UK visa has expired and he's been ordered to leave the country immediately.
"He will be returning to Pakistan on Tuesday and will be celebrating New Year with his family," Nazir's agent, Samir Ahmed, told the Mirror. "His return to the UK is pending approval of a working visa. We fully expect him to return in the coming weeks."
