The Wreaths Across America
project began in 1992 when Maine businessman, Morril Worchester, decided to expand the annual wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery
. Becoming an official non-profit organization that same year, the mission of the organization is to "Remember, Honor, and Teach". Since 1992, the organization has helped to coordinate wreath laying ceremonies at National Cemeteries in all 50 states.
Wreaths were laid in Arlington National Cemetery on December 17, 2012, continuing the decades long tradition.
On December 15, wreaths were laid at the Houston National Cemetery
On Saturday, Wreaths Across America will have a ceremony at the Jacksonville National Cemetery
in Jacksonville, FL.
Thousands of Wreaths Across America volunteers place an estimated 400,000 evergreen wreaths at almost 800 cemeteries in all 50 states and 24 overseas sites according to the U.S. Department of Defense
