A Marine veteran who has been in a jail in Mexico for months has been freed, according to U.S. officials and his lawyers.
According to USA Today, Jon Hammar was jailed in Mexico after he tried to carry a family heirloom shotgun across the border.
Hammar's lawyer Tweeted on Friday night that his client has been released from a jail in Matamoros, Mexico.
According to Fox, Hammar was arrested on August 13, after he attempted to declare the shotgun. Hammar's father told Fox that his son was suffering from a stomach virus, and that they were looking for a hotel to spend the night at.
Jon's father said that they were both very tired and were at their wits end, but they were glad that Jon was out of jail.
According to CNN, Hammer's family recently turned to Ros-Lehtinen, who heads the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and she decided to take the matter up with the U.S. ambassador to Mexico and the Mexican ambassador, as well as the State Department.
She said that she is happy knowing that Jon will be home for Christmas with his family and friends.
