A member of parliament belonging to the far-left party SYRIZA has accused members of Golden Dawn (Chrysi Avgi) of launching a murderous attack on him Sunday evening outside the Olympic Stadium in Athens.
SYRIZA MP Dimitris Stratoulis has recounted that during half-time at a football match he was approached by an unidentified group that claimed they were Chrysafgites. Stratoulis claims the three men struck "murderous blows" to his head whilst threatening to kill him.
According to Prota Thema Stratoulis was attended to by medical staff and is in good health. SYRIZA has demanded the immediate arrest of the three unknown assailants.
A government spokesman, along with political parties SYRIZA, PASOK, the Communists and Independent Greeks, were quick to condemn the attack on Stratouis.
Golden Dawn has denied they were involved on the attack on the left-wing MP. The party issued a press release stating: "The Golden Dawn has nothing to do with the attack against the MP of SYRIZA Stratouli." The party went on to accuse the other political parties of hypocrisy on the issue of violence. It said they take a joint line in favour of violence due to their failure to condemn the recent bomb attack against a Golden Dawn office.
Golden Dawn went on to accuse the "venal media" of rushing to promote any falsehood against the party.
