A video of Syrian rebel soldiers beheading their unarmed civilian hostages has sent out shock waves, as a 12-year-old boy wielded the machete. Human Rights Watch have authenticated the video.
Writing in the Independent Patrick Cockburn is one of the few foreign journalists in Damascus to bluntly state that the situation in Syria is being misrepresented by MSM. He asserts: "Inaccurate and misleading reporting by the media where bias towards the rebels and against the government is unsurpassed since the height of the Cold War. Exaggerated notions are given of rebel strength and popularity."Cockburn highlights the extremely graphic video which Syrians have been watching, saying "The execution video is the most graphic illustration of deepening religious bigotry on the part of the rebels." He says it will make Assad loyalists more determined to fight to the end as it foretells the fate that awaits those not supporting the rebels, adding "It is having great influence on how Syrians judge their future."
Cockburn goes on to state that the video contradicts the picture painted by foreign leaders promoting support for rebels against the Assad regime.
According to the BBC the rebels have begun to alienate local opinion due to the prominence of radical Islamic groups.
