A teacher and child have been wounded and a gunman is dead after a school shooting reported today at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Netwon, CT
UPDATED: NBC news reports that state police responded to a school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT today. Lt.Paul Vance spoke to NBC but gave no information about any injuries or the identity of the shooter.
According to ABC News, a gunman is dead and at least one other person was shot. Huffington Post reports that a teacher was wounded during the apparent shooting.
The Newtown Bee reports one child was seriously wounded and was seen being carried out of the school by a police officer.
Hartford Courant reports that police reported a shooter in the school's main office just after 9:40 am. Some children were still in the school at 10:30 am. Around 10:45 am, heavily armed officers gathered at the school where stretchers were set up.
Secretary of superintendent Kathy June of the Newtown Public School District released a statement that all schools in the district are on lockdown. "The district is taking preventive measures by putting all schools in lockdown until we ensure the safety of all students and staff," she says.
CT emergency management officials say ambulances and other emergency vehicles were on the way and staging was set up near the school
Dr. Robinson said it is best if parents do not try to call the district at this time, and the school district will release a message once further information is known.
UPDATE: ABC reports multiple fatalies at 11:59 AM. Police say some children were shot but have not confirmed if any children were killed in the shooting.
12:23 PM: Chicago Tribune reports children were among those killed in the shooting.
1:13 PM: NBC reports over 25 people killed in the shooting, 18 of them children.
