Edward Orenchuk III,
23, of Garden City allegedly had hundreds of pornographic images of children, some as young as 5, on his home computer.
Orenchuk has been charged with three counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child and three counts of possessing a sexual performance by a child, both of which are felonies and could result in as many as seven years behind bars if he is convicted.
The charges against Orenchuk are particularly alarming because of his position as an assistant Scout Master with Boy Scouts of America Troop #243.
"The defendant's regular contact with children... makes these charges that much more disturbing." Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice told the New York Daily News
The Boy Scouts, an organization with a history of protecting pedophiles and child rapists
among its ranks, reacted quickly to the news of Orenchuk's arrest, expelling him immediately after learning of the charges against him.
"We were shocked to learn about the allegations against this individual," the Theodore Roosevelt Council of Boy Scouts said in a statement
. "The behavior included in these allegations runs counter to everything for which the Boy Scouts of America stands."
