article imageWhat was the top Google search term in the UK this year?

By Tim Sandle     Dec 11, 2012 in Technology
According to Google, the most searched for term in the UK during 2012 was not the "Olympics". Instead, "Euro 2012" topped the list.
Despite the dominance of the Olympic Games in London, the international sporting festival was not the most searched for term in the UK on the search engine Google. An Olympic related term came in at number 2 with "Olympics tickets". Instead the major European soccer tournament, played every four years, came out in the top sport with the query "Euro 2012".
This information comes from Google's annual zeitgeist report. According to the BBC, the top ten search terms were:
1. Euro 2012
2. Olympic tickets
3. Whitney Houston
4. Kate Middleton
5. April Jones
6. Netflix
7. NatWest Online
8. iPad 3
9. Gary Barlow
10. Gangnam style
The Google report also contains its top trending people. These were, according to the Guardian:
1. Whitney Houston
2. Kate Middleton
3. Gary Barlow
4. Tulisa
5. Jessica Ennis
6. Fabrice Muamba
7. Michael Clarke Duncan
8. Morgan Freeman
9. Prince Harry
10. Usain Bolt
The Google list stands in contrast to Yahoo. Here, reality TV star Kim Kardashian was Yahoo's most-searched person of 2012 and its third most popular search term overall. The full Yahoo! list is:
Yahoo! overall top search terms of 2012:
1. US election
2. iPhone 5
3. Kim Kardashian
4. Kate Upton
5. Kate Middleton
6. Whitney Houston
7. Olympics
8. Political polls
9. Lindsay Lohan
10. Jennifer Lopez
Maybe the differences between Google and Yahoo! suggest that different demographic groups use different search engines.
