With the Blu-ray & DVD finally in stores, star Christian Bale recalls wearing the Batsuit for the last time, his final shooting day, Batman’s climactic fight with Bane and the English actor's feelings about being a part of the iconic Batman trilogy.
According to 37-year-old, Welsh-born actor Christian Bale, putting on the iconic Batsuit for the last time in the final installment of director Christopher Nolan's uber-successful cinematic trilogy based on the Batman mythos – The Dark Knight Rises – filled the star of the film franchise with a whirlwind of mixed emotions. "I've always had a strange relationship with that bloody Batsuit," admits Bale, who sits down to make himself comfortable in a Beverly Hills hotel suite set aside for his chats with the press. "I remember the first time I put on the Batman suit, I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t think and I was about to have a nervous breakdown and a panic attack."
Donning the Batsuit for Batman Begins (the first of Nolan's Dark Knight films) does still, 'til this very day, elicit quite a few unpleasant memories from Bale's psyche. "That very first time I put on the suit, I asked everyone to leave me alone in the room in the suit," he recalls. "I stood there for twenty minutes all by myself thinking, ‘OK, I’d really like to make this movie. I’d like to be able to get through this moment here, too.' I stood there thinking, ‘Be very calm. Maybe you can get through this.’ That’s how claustrophobic I felt in the suit."
Christian Bale as Batman in director Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight Rises'
Although Bale is very much a Method-style actor who has gone to great, near-harmful extremes to prepare for his film roles (the already thin actor nearly starved himself to death to lose a tremendous amount of bodyweight for The Mechanic), Bale was so emotionally crippled by the feelings he experienced while modeling the Batsuit for his initial costume fitting for Batman Begins that he almost passed on taking the career-making role as Bruce Wayne/Batman. "I told (director) Christopher Nolan, ‘I love the role, but you’re going to have to re-cast it,’" confesses Bale, dressed in a pair of Khakis and a dark blue dress shirt. "Luckily, Christopher told me they would make whatever changes I needed to make me comfortable enough to be in it."
Christopher Nolan directs a scene from 'The Dark Knight Rises'
Bale wore Batman's trademark outerwear for a second go-round in the critically-acclaimed, award-winning blockbuster film The Dark Knight (Heath Ledger would win a posthumous Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance as The Joker). When Bale put on a new, improved version of the Batsuit for The Dark Knight Rises some of his old anxious feelings towards the Batsuit began to surface, but the emotions diminished almost as quickly as they appeared. “When I put it on, it was a very similar feeing, although the suit had been improved and it’s far more comfortable now,” he confesses. “I’ve lost the panic attack feeling, because in the last suit I could rip it off myself if I started to see stars."
Christian Bale portrays Batman in 'The Dark Knight Rises'
These days, Bale is even able to crack jokes about having to initially try on a “previously worn” Batsuit during his early talks with Nolan about taking on the lead role. "I have to add that the very first time I ever tried on a Batsuit, it was actually at my audition with Chris Nolan. All he had was Val Kilmer’s costume and it didn’t fit very well. I could make a bad joke here, but I wont,” he says, followed by a hearty laugh."
However, the emotionally saddening realization that he would be portraying the Caped Crusader and billionaire Bruce Wayne for one last time in The Dark Knight Rises finally hit Bale after the filming of his final scene for the third installment of Nolan’s triumvirate of Batman movies. "My last scene was with Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, and we were on a roof in New York City," he remembers, "I wrapped filming, and I went back to base camp. I just sat in a room and asked everyone, ‘Can you leave me alone for 20 minutes?’ I sat there again thinking, ‘OK, this is it.’ But this time I added, ‘I will never take that cowl off again.’
"It was a real moment of pride, too, because of what we had achieved," Bale continues. "We did what we set out to do. It was a very important character to the fans, and me, which makes me very proud. All three movies not only changed my life, but my career and I appreciate that very much.”
In the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, Gotham City is threatened by the masked terrorist Bane, forcing Batman to return from an eight-year absence and fight for his city one more time. In The Dark Knight Rises, it has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar, Selena Kyle (Anne Hathaway) with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane (Tom Hardy), a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.
The Dark Knight Rises also stars Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) as Miranda Tate and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Premium Rush) as John Blake/Robin, as well as the return of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight alumni: Oscar-winner Michael Caine (The Cider House Rules) as Alfred, Gary Oldman (Harry Potter) as Commissioner Gordon and Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby) reprising the role of Lucius Fox.
Christian Bale on The Dark Knight Rises:
Christian Bale is Batman in 'The Dark Knight Rises'
In The Dark Knight Rises, the character of Bane advocates occupying Gotham and destroying the rich – not to mention the entire city. He has a nuke that’s ready to go off at any moment. With all that has been on with Wall Street, that is a pretty topical subject. Were you surprised about that part of Chris Nolan’s script when you read it?
"No, because Chris Nolan has an uncanny ability to make movies topical. When the script for this final film was written in 2008, he had no idea that there would be Occupy Wall Street. When we were filming those scenes, I looked at him and said, ‘How did you know?’"
Bane (Tom Hardy) occupies Gotham's financial district in 'The Dark Knight Rises'
This final film of the trilogy is really entrenched in Batman lore...
"Well, the character was created in 1939, during World War II. It was an answer to the uselessness individuals felt during this horrific time in the world. He was always a very topical character and Chris returned it to that."
Batman (Bale) battles Bane (Hardy) in 'The Dark Knight Rises'
The fight sequences between Batman and Bane are pretty brutal. What was it like filming the climatic fight scene of the film?
"That final fight scene between Bane and Batman started on location in Pittsburgh and we finished it in New York City. It took forever. We just kept punching each other out. (laughs) There was also the excitement of about 1000 extras around us. Everyone was punching each other. It invigorated Tom Hardy and me.”
What are your thoughts on Tom Hardy, both as an actor and as Batman’s toughest nemesis, Bane?
"Tom was a phenomenal actor and formidable opponent. He’s the first adversary who can whip Batman’s butt. We’ve never seen this sort of fighting before with Batman who can lose. That’s the thing I love the most about the fight scenes. You learned what Batman had to go through in order to defeat this man. It’s not just two people punching each other nonstop. The audience can look for the changes, the weaknesses, the strengths as each of these men try to dominate each other."
Christian Bale portrays Bruce Wayne/Batman in 'The Dark Knight Rises,' the final installment of director Christopher Nolan's Batman cinematic trilogy
You’ve done a ton of indie films (Velvet Underground, Laurel Canyon, Harsh Times) and several big-budget Hollywood pictures (Public Enemies, The Fighter, Terminator Salvation). How do all those motion pictures compare to the three Batman films you did with Christopher Nolan?
"I tried doing a couple of big movies that didn’t manage what Chris has managed with this genre. I think these movies can be pure entertainment roller coasters. But people can go home and think about them. It’s more than entertainment.”
Christian Bale has recently wrapped-up filming on two films, including the Terrence Malick-directed romantic drama Knight Of Cups (which also stars Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchett) and the Scott Cooper-directed thriller Out Of The Furnace with costars Zoe Saldana and Woody Harrelson.
Bale’s The Dark Knight Rises costar, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper, Lincoln), has just finished his writing and directorial debut Don Jon’s Addiction, a comedy in which he also portrays the lead role, alongside Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore. It has been reported by many reliable news sources that Gordon-Levitt has landed the role of Batman in the upcoming Justice League epic, and if everything goes as planned, he will portray Batman/Bruce Wayne in the next planned trilogy of Batman films.

Twenty-seven people from teenagers to professional adults, from a lawyer to a prison guard to a reverend are interviewed about how their lives changed on November 4, 2008.
