The internet meme sensation is believed
to have begun in December of 2008, when a teenage girl named Catie Wayne, also known as "Boxxy"
, uploaded videos she had made with friends to YouTube. The videos began to spread and by January 2009, the Guardian
did an article on "Boxxy" and her memes. The term "meme", which means an idea that is spread from blog to blog or an internet information generator, has steadily grown in popularity ever since.
In 2012, the internet meme seemed even more popular than ever, with new memes seemingly exploding across the internet weekly. Although there are countless memes to choose from, here are my best memes of 2012.
5. Pet Shaming -
Pet shaming is a new sensation that began to sweep the internet during the summer. Pet owners, usually upset that their cat or dog has done something "naughty", either add a caption to a pet's pictures or pose their pet next to a sign indicating the "crime" that has been committed. Tumblr
has a page strictly dedicated to pet shaming.
Numerous Pet Shaming pages have even popped up on Facebook, such at Shame Your Pet
and the Pet Shaming
There is even a Pet Shaming
4. Eastwooding -
Eastwooding is a term born from the 2012 Republican National Convention. During Clint Eastwood's speech, he used an empty chair as a prop, "talking" to President Obama. Nearly four months later, you can still find at least one #eastwooding post on Twitter
Eastwood appeared on The Ellen Show and when asked about his convention speech he said
"Democrats that were watching thought I was going senile, and the Republicans knew I was."
During Eastwood's speech, there were 78,272 tweets regarding Eastwood's "talk" with the President. In less than a 24 hours period, there 93,204 tweets about the meme inspiring speech.
3. Ridiculously Photogenic Guy -
In April of this year, someone took a picture of Zeddie Little, a 25-year-old runner from Charleston, SC, while he was running in a marathon. The photo received nearly 1.5 million views
in a weeks time. Little became so popular, he was even invited to appear on ABC's Good Morning America
to talk about his instant fame.
Fans of Little started the Zeddie Little's Army
on Twitter, posting various meme photos of Little.
Little also inspired other "Ridiculously Photogenic" memes such as Ridiculously Photogenic Homeless Guy and Ridiculously Photogenic Baby.
2. Binders Full of Women -
This instant meme was created during the 2012 Presidential debates. During one debate, the question of equal pay was raised. Former Presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, responded by saying
"I went to a number of women’s groups and said, ‘Can you help us find folks,’ and they brought us whole binders full of women.”
The moment those words were uttered, the internet began buzzing with tweets, Facebook post, news articles and op-eds. As reported by Digital Journal
, videos began popping up on YouTube depicting the newest political meme, and Tumblr created a page
specifically for the catch phrase.
1. McKayla is Not Impressed -
This meme began during the 2012 London Summer Olympics when American gymnast McKayla Maroney was clearly unimpressed with being awarded the silver medal.
Her unimpressed facial expression launched the "McKayla is NOT impressed"
Facebook page, as well as her own Tumblr
page. Her pictures has been added to numerous photos of celebrities and everyday people alike.
Her photo has even been superimposed on the Statue of Liberty.
When McKayla and the U.S. Women's Olympic Gymnastics team visited the White House, she and President Obama posed for this unimpressed photo.
There are many other 2012 memes that could be added to the list such as "Text from Hilary", "What People Think I Do", "Horses and Bayonets" and "Grumpy Cat". However, these are not only my personal favorites, they are also some of the top mentioned memes of 2012.
