article imageDizzy tracking Makdissi: Where is the Syrian govt spokesman?

By Mark Steinberg     Dec 4, 2012 in World
Syrian foreign ministry spokesman, Jihad Makdissi is on his way to the United States after it appears he escaped from war torn Syria.
According to the Guardian, Syrian foreign ministry spokesman, Jihad Makdissi, is en route or perhaps already in the United States. Earlier reports had pegged Makdissi as being in London but then it appeared this was a stop over point. Now, it seems no one knows where he is. He's quickly become the "Where's Waldo?" of the Syrian foreign ministry.
After the defection, one diplomat was quoted as saying, "If the man charged with lying to the outside world can't stomach Assad any more it is a pretty damning indictment of the regime – and a message to others who might be thinking of following suit."
The Syrian civil war began last year after decades of dictatorial rule by the Ba'th party. So far, approximately 37,000 people have been killed at least have of them civilians, including women and children. The U.N. reports 1.2 Million people have been displaced, It has also accused government forces of "gross violations against human rights and crimes against humanity". Currently, there is a fear held by major western countries that government forces may soon be turning to chemical weapons to crush opposition forces. The humanitarian catastrophe that would result is terrifying to contemplate.
