Los Angeles - David Beckham completed his five and a half years at LA Galaxy by helping his team retain the MLS Cup, with a 3-1 win over Houston Dynamo. This was Beckham's final match for in the team.
As reported earlier by the Digital Journal, David Beckham announced that he was leaving the soccer team LA Galaxy at the start of December. What could have been predicted was that the English player would do so on a high.
This high was his team winning the Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup. The MLS Cup is the championship match of Major League Soccer and the tournament began in 1996. This seasons’ title match was contested between the regular season’s eighth and ninth best teams in terms of table position.
The match, contested at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California, was an exciting one. Houston led 1-0 at the half-time stage. After the mid-game interval, however, Galaxy game out strong. According to the BBC, an Omar Gonzalez header followed by a well-struck Landon Donovan's penalty turned the match around. From 2-1, Galaxy stretched their lead to 3-1 through a second spot-kick, dispatched by Robbie Keane in injury-time, and went onto to complete victory.
According to Sports Illustrated, it was Gonzalez who was the star player: "His aerial prowess thwarted any and all direct Dynamo attacks, and his positional sense, aside from the Dynamo goal, was prolific and poised as well. He cut out cross after cross, both in the air and on the ground, especially as the Dynamo threw everything forward in desperation over the final 10 minutes."
This was Galaxy's second successive win, having defeated Houston Dynamo 1-0 last year.
Beckham joined LA Galaxy in 2007 and the club reputedly spent over $32 million on securing his services. The player now has opportunities awaiting in Australia, or the U.K., for his final couple of years of playing soccer.
On leaving Galaxy, Beckham told Soccer Net: "It's been a successful six years here, and now that we've won the second one, it's even more satisfying. I just hope people have enjoyed me playing here. It's what I always hope for when I step on the field... I just hope I've brought a bit of interest to the game in America. If that's the single thing I've done, then great."
