A popular American magician was seriously injured when his hair was set on fire by the host of a Dominican Republic television show.
Las Vegas-based magician and Discovery Channel's Breaking Magic co-host, Wayne Houchin, was appearing on the Dominican Republic show Approach the Stars. At one point during the show, the show's host, Franklin Barazarte, poured Aqua de Florida cologne over Houchin's head. The cologne is known to be a highly flammable liquid.
Although it is unclear why Barazarte poured the liquid on Houchin, some are speculating that it was some sort of an exorcism attempt that went horribly wrong. According to the Telegraph, the cologne is used by Caribbean shamen and witch doctors as a cleansing agent.
Officials with Curiosidades, the producers of Approach the Stars, issued a statement which said that Barazarte offered to give Houchin and others "a blessing" and drink of "Water of Florida." The statement said the incident was "undoubtedly a CRIMINAL ATTACK".
Others however believe it was simply an unscripted prank gone awry.
Houchin was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for burns to his head, face, neck and right hand. He will remain in the Dominican Republic for an undetermined period of time while he continues to receive treatment for his burns.
Houchin posted a statement on his Facebook page saying:
"Monday while appearing on a TV show in the Dominican Republic, the TV host took a handful of Aqua De Florida, ignited it and intentionally dropped it on my head, setting me on fire. I was not aware he was going to do this. This was not a stunt or part of an act - this was a criminal attack."
