Yesterday's record-breaking Powerball drawing saw two winners who will share in a $579.9 million jackpot. One winner hails from Arizona, the other from Missouri.
Earlier this week, as reported by Digital Journal, it was announced the Powerball jackpot had reached record levels. At that time the jackpot had been reported to be $425 million, however as of yesterday had increased to $550 million.
As more tickets were sold, lottery officials said the jackpot level could change and by the end of sales. At the close of the lottery, the jackpot had reached a whopping $579.90 million. NBC News reported "at one point tickets were selling at a rate of 130,000 a minute" nationwide.
According to the Powerball website, one winning ticket for last night's drawing was sold in Arizona, the other in Missouri. The winners will split the prize which has a cash value of $379.8 million before taxes. Officials said they will provide more details about the winning tickets on Thursday during a news conference later in the day. At this time the winners have not been identified nor has it been said if anyone has come forward.
The winning numbers were: : 05 - 16 - 22 - 23 - 29 and Powerball 06.
The Powerball lottery game is played in 42 states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands. The new jackpot has reset back to $40 million.
