article imageTop 10 list of America's 'beasts of wealth'

By Stav Dimitropoulos     Nov 27, 2012 in Business
The world, or at least a great part of it, is incessantly getting poorer due to the global recession but several of America's "beasts of wealth" seem unaffected by this whole mess; even better, they are getting richer.
If you would be interested in finding out who of these ultra-rich individuals, all of whom are businessmen/women, make the top-10 list, you will find the Forbes list below invaluable. In descending order, America's richest individuals at the moment are:
1) Bill Gates. Whenever you hear of Microsoft, Bill Gates springs to mind. You have also heard that if Bill Gates collects a $500 note laying in the street as he walks to work, things are rather ominous for him...The famous 56-year-old philanthropist and founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation ,who is now non-Executive Chairman of the world's largest personal-computer software company has a net worth of $66 billion and is America's most economically powerful citizen.
2) Warren Buffet. Buffet is the 82-year-old Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. In a recent interview of his, Buffet has said that his investment managers Todd Combs and Ted Weschler receive $1 million salaries and can earn more if their bets beat the Standard & Poor's 500 Index. A good gamble for Mr. Buffet it appears, as he has a net worth of $46 billion.
3) Larry Ellison. Ellison is the Chief Executive Officer of Oracle Corp,a multinational computer technology corporation that specializes in developing and marketing computer hardware systems and enterprise software products. 68-year-old Ellison has a net worth of $41 billion.
4) Charles Koch. 77-year-old Koch is the head of America's second biggest private company, $115 billion (sales) Koch Industries. His company, which has interests in pipelines, refineries, fertilizer and consumer products, seems to be adept at continuously generating cash flow, according to Forbes.
4) David Koch. No, the article has not made a mistake. Mr. Koch is Charles's younger brother (he is 72), Vice-Chairman of the Koch Industries and has a net worth of &31 billion, which is the exact same as his brother's.
6) Christy Walton and family. Here comes the first woman of the list and the richest female in America. The 57-year-old Wal-Mart widow inherited a great fortune when husband John Walton, died in an airplane crash in 2005. As Forbes reports:
WaltonJohn's investment in First Solar had boosted Christy's net worth well above the rest of her family, but the stock tanked in 2012, closing her lead to just $1.1 billion (down from $3.4 billion last year) over brother-in-law Jim. The rest of her holdings are in Wal-Mart, the massive retailer founded by her father-in-law Sam Walton and his brother James in 1962. Since last year, Christy received more than $420 million in Wal-Mart dividends after taxes
7) Jim Walton. A Wal-Mart "triumph" again, as the 64-year-old is the heir of Wal-Mart, which now has sales of $444 billion and employs 2.2 million people worldwide. Walton's net worth is &26.8 billion.
8) Alice Walton. 63-year-old Alice Walton, daughter of retail visionary Sam, who founded the Wal-Mart "dynasty", is the second woman in this list and has a net worth of $26.3 billion. She is also Chairman of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
9) Robson Walton. Yes, I know you wonder whether this is fair, but that is life. The eldest son (68 years old) of visionary retailer Sam, a former clerk who opened his first store with help from his brother James in 1962 in Bentonville, Ark, has currently a net worth of $26.1 billion.
10) Michael Bloomberg. The last person in this list is 70 years old, owns the financial data firm Bloomberg LLC and is New York City's Mayor. His net worth is $25 billion.
What could be more ideal to end this article after all these dazzling fortunes than a witty quote about money?
While money can't buy happiness, it certainly lets you choose your own form of misery. Groucho Marx
