The latest antic of Flaming Lips singer Wayne Coyne caused TSA to shut down Oklahoma City Airport, as he thoughtlessly decided to travel with an "unexplodable" hand-grenade in his luggage.
Travellers flying out of Oklahoma's Will Rogers Airport missed flights and lost money as a result of Wayne Coyne's grenade gaffe. TSA officials called the bomb squad when the gold painted grenade tripped the alarm and was discovered in Coyne's luggage.
Exclaim reported Coyne described the reaction of airport security staff on discovering the dead device, saying: "They all believed what I was saying; they all believed it was just a dumb accident. The bomb squad guy came out, and once he comes out, there's two weeks of paperwork that has to be filled out. Everybody could immediately tell what it was. But it's too late — the merry-go-round had to go its whole way around before you could get off."
Although Coyne tweeted "Sorry Sorry Sorry!! Everyone that was inconvenienced because of my grenade at OKC airport!!" he wasn't willing to take full responsibility for the incident. He said:
"I would agree that it was stupid of me, but I don't feel wholly responsible if people missed their flights. I'm not making the rules. It's not illegal for me to have that grenade with me."Not all the disgruntled travellers who missed their flights are so quick to absolve Coyne of guilt. Ogle Mole wrote: "Flight left without me, all because of Wayne Coyne....I think Wayne Coyne should reimburse me, at a minimum I want to drop acid with him and Yoko Ono. Can you help me out to let Wayne know that his music is fucking weird and I could use that $1000 ASAP. Thanks."
According to the Spin, Coyne's stunt drew criticisms from social media sites, including one tweet which denounced his action as a "selfish idiotic publicity stunt." One Tweeter even pointed out "@waynecoyne is retweeting complaints about himself. ego trip or genius?"
