As the Israeli military continued to pound Gaza for the fifth straight day, broadening its targets within the troubled Palestinian enclave, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of preparations to 'significantly expand' operations there.
With drones overhead directing missile and mortar fire, and with reports today of sea-based strikes from Israeli warships, the intensity of the Israeli military campaign against the troubled Gaza Strip appears to have increased notably. According to the Washington Post, Israeli targets have been broadened to include international media buildings as part of its larger Pillar of Defense strategy, as the Israeli government has termed it.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised that the military was prepared to "significantly expand" the campaign in Gaza, as Voice of America reported on Sunday.
UK Foreign Secretary William Hague warned Israel on Sunday that a ground assault might tarnish Israel's reputation in the international community, according to The Telegraph.
Thousands of Israeli troops have assembled along the outskirts of Gaza, as a ground assault appeared eminent. Israeli military forces last entered Gaza in 2008.
While Egypt has attempted to broker a cease-fire, many Arab leaders have criticized Israel's response to the crisis. Israel's Pillar of Defense operation was put in motion after a barrage of rockets launched by Gaza-based Palestinian militants struck several locations in the south of Israel.
“We are extracting a heavy price from Hamas and the terror organizations,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in his cabinet address. “The army is prepared to significantly expand the operation.”
