article imageHow 'Gossip Girl' star Blake Lively was thrown in with 'Savages' Special

By Earl Dittman     Nov 18, 2012 in Entertainment
Taking on the role of Ophelia in Oliver Stone’s brutal crime thriller 'Savages,' Lively portrays a character that is a polar opposite of Serena on 'Gossip Girl.' She talks about working on 'Savages' and spitting in Benicio Del Toro's face.
Twenty-five-year-old actress Blake Lively – who shot to stardom with her lead role as Serena Van Der Woodsen in the ultra-popular television series Gossip Girl – has always been incredibly selective in choosing the motion pictures she’s made during her hiatuses from her mega-hit TV series (which comes to an end after the 2012/2013 Sixth Season). Beginning with her 2005 appearance in the ensemble film The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants (and its subsequent sequel), Lively would go on to land major acting gigs in Ben Affleck's critically-acclaimed directorial offering, The Town, and the action-packed superhero movie Green Lantern (where she met her husband of nearly two months, actor Ryan Reynolds). When she was asked by three-time Academy Award-winning director Oliver Stone (Born on the Fourth of July, Platoon, Wall Street) to costar in the ferocious crime thriller Savages – a cautionary tale about three seemingly normal, passive young adults who are forced to participate in the brutally violent world of Mexican drug cartels – Lively didn’t hesitate or think twice about agreeing to become a part of such a prestigious project.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I feel like all I’ve done lately is play really sexually-charged drug addicts – maybe I’ve got to go to Disneyland and get some more excitement in my life,” jokingly proclaimed the blonde, native-Californian about playing a role so unlike Serena in Gossip Girl. “Seriously, I love Savages because it is so different from everything that I’ve ever known. Or seen! So, I loved that challenge, and I just love exploring worlds that are so unknown to me. I think most actors would love to work with Oliver Stone at some point in their careers, so when I was asked about acting in Savages, I just jumped at the chance.”
In the Oliver Stone-directed Savages – based on Don Winslow’s bestselling crime novel – Laguna Beach entrepreneurs Ben (Aaron Johnson) and Chon (Taylor Kitsch) raise and sell some of the best marijuana ever developed, while sharing a one-of-a-kind love with the extraordinary beauty Ophelia AKA “O” (Lively). Their idyllic life is shattered when the Mexican Baja Cartel demands that the trio partner with them. But the cartel’s merciless boss, Elena (Salma Hayek), and her brutal enforcer, Lado (Benicio Del Toro), underestimate the unbreakable bonds among these three friends. Ben and Chon – with the reluctant, slippery assistance of a dirty DEA agent (John Travolta) – launch a seemingly unwinnable war against the drug lords that escalates into a savage, high-stakes battle of wills.

“Doing this film was a real challenge for me, especially the really graphic sex scenes,” Lively confessed. “But, I had so much trust in Oliver and my costars, I tried not to worry about being naked in front of the cameras and just thought about giving the best performance I could. I did, and I think it worked out fine.”
Upon its theatrical release this past July 6 – during a July 4th box office weekend dominated by mega-blockbusters like The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-ManSavages would perform only modestly (raking in an estimated $45 million dollars in North American receipts) despite receiving a bevy of complimentary critical reviews. The yet-to-be-married Lively, who sat down to talk about Savages in late-June (just weeks before the film’s release) was already harboring an instinctive feeling that Savages might be ignored by a better part of the movie-going public, especially since Savages would have to single-handedly take on a couple of multi-million dollar-budgeted, superhero flicks vying for the attention (and hard-earned dollars) of similiar movie-going audience members.

“We’re coming out with Savages among all of these other massive summer movies, and that can be tough,” Lively said before the red carpet premiere of Savages. “We don’t have a (superhero) cape in this movie, so we’re at a big disadvantage. So, we all kind of knew that we were this black sheep of the summer, but that only made us more excited, because it was challenging for us as actors. The film really challenges the audience, too, and that's exciting. Look, it‘s going to do what it‘s going to do. I‘m just proud to have been a part of it.”

Lively recalls what it was like working with the iconic filmmaker Oliver Stone and her Savages costars...
“Having somebody like Oliver (Stone) made doing this film such a great experience, because he gave us so many opportunities. He gave us all the knowledge and information we needed. And, he brought people in, like DEA Agents. I even met a little girl who had been kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel. We also met people involved in marijuana. We also sat with each other and really rehearsed this movie. There are so many unexpected, complex relationships in this film. Like O, Ophelia, is in love with two men, but then there is also a kind of love story between the characters that Salma (Hayek) and I play. You know, with O's need for a mother and her need for a daughter. So, we all just sat down with each other, and there was such unity in that. I didn’t even have a scene with John Travolta, but he sat down and spoke for an hour with me. It was a great experience.”

Lively reveals her feelings about having to do incredibly graphic sex scenes in Savages...
“They were terrifying – in so many ways – because it is so graphic and so violent. The arc O (Ophelia) experiences was so challenging as an actor, and also challenging as a person. Mainly, because I’ve got a family. I’ve got nieces and nephews, and I’ve got a young audience for Gossip Girl. So, that played into it, too. Also, you have a responsibility to your personal life, It was really, definitely challenging, because you’re on a set with forty people and the boys (Kitsch and Johnson) are standing on the set naked! That was always a little awkward. So, it was a really strange situation to be in, making this movie. But, the most important thing for me all along, was to tell the truth, and tell the heart of this story. I think that she’s very much a modern girl. O comes from money, living in Laguna Beach, and her mom is off with her eight different husbands. It’s a shame that audiences will miss the really beautiful stuff I did with Uma Thurman. I think that really told a lot more about how a girl could end up this way. Divorces are so much more common now than they once were. Love is very nontraditional. These are three people who don’t have a family, so they create a family with each other. What I was really drawn to in the story was all the love between my character and the boys – between the boys and each other – and then between my character and Salma, and all those complexities and tensions.”

Lively explains the tattoo that O (Ophelia) dons in the film...
“It was done by one of my favorite artists, Sage Vaughn. In the book, O has a dolphin tattoo with a sea nymph. I asked, ‘What is the significance? Because she lives in Laguna Beach?’ Then, I said, ‘Let’s make this mean something,' and Sage created this beautiful, pure, colorful natural look, with butterflies or birds on barbed wire and picket fences, and these man-made structures. I just thought it was such a perfect example of this girl, who is pure, free and hopeful. But, O’s been really broken and torn by her life and society. I think if you're going to get a tattoo, it should be significant. Especially when it’s all the way up your arms and your body. So, I thought that would be more significant for her.”

How Blake felt about creating O’s overall look...
“I loved the clothes. One of my favorite parts is always designing the character. But, the hardest part for me is when I play a character who is so different from me, I love to hide behind them. That’s actually a really good secret. If you don’t look like her or talk like her, you can disappear. But, when you look like her and talk like her and you’re from Southern California, and you wear clothes that you went shopping for at Topshop and said, ‘Oh, I think this would be a good idea.‘ If you bought one for yourself, then it gets to be a little messy. And,then you're like, ‘I don’t want people to think this is me!’ So, that was one of the really weird personal challenges for me.”

Lively recalls what it was like spitting in costar Benicio Del Toro’s face for one intense scene in the film...
“A lot of the movie just kind of happened – with so many key moments! When I spit in Benicio’s face, that was something Benicio and I were talking about. Like, after a take or two he said, ‘If you feel so angry at me, spit in my face!’ And, I was like, ‘I can’t do that!’ Then, he went, ‘Yes, you can. Go ahead, hock a big loogie in my face.’ (laughs) I was like, ‘This is the greatest day ever! I get to do that to someone.’ I said to myself, ‘Okay, he’s asking for it! I’ll spit in his face.’ But so many of the big moments in the film were things that – they weren't on the page! They just happened. So, we were lucky to be in that sort of environment, where we could create and where it wasn’t just all hammered out. We rehearsed so much and, yet, that didn’t make it manufactured. It just gave us the freedom to sort of let the story tell itself.

Blake on the Sixth and Final Season of Gossip Girl...
“We’re finishing our last season, we started in June (2012), and that was actually the hardest part. Because normally, we have about a two month break from Gossip Girl every year, and that’s when I do a movie. But Savages started exactly when the Gossip Girl season started. So for four months, I was flying back and forth between New York and LA. I shot seven-day-weeks, and was going with red eyes to the set. That was a hard balance. No, that wasn’t a balance, that was just a landslide!” (laughs)

Dust Up
It's going down...A one-eyed vigilante with a dark past has vowed to change his ways, trading his machine gun for a yoga mat. Dust Up stars genre favorite Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Drones), Ezra Buzzington (Justified), Jeremiah Birkett, Travis Betz, Aaron Gaffey, Devin Barry and Mike C. Nelson. In the high desert, people like to lay low. Jack Truman (Gaffey) is a shellshocked soldier turned handyman, seeking refuge in the hot sun from a cold, dark past. He's traded his service pistol for a cordless drill, forsaken allegiance to the flag for meditation on a yoga mat. Jack's only friend: a quirky hipster named Mo (Barry), who wants nothing more than to embody the life of a Native-American Indian, complete with teepee, organic foods, tomahawk...and tube socks. Their peaceful oddball paradise is interrupted when Jack answers a call from a desperate customer, Ella (Benson), a struggling new mother in the middle of nowhere – soaked in mud from a broken water main and drowning in debt. Ella calls Jack for help, unable to reach her elusive husband, Herman (Betz), a methed-out jackass who lost his job and disappeared into the desert. What should be a simple plumbing gig turns into a world of hurt for Jack, as he soon finds himself embroiled in this family's twisted situation – leading to an inevitable and violent confrontation with Herman's maniacal dealer, Buzz (Birkett). A sex-crazed drug lord, Buzz has assembled his own legion of cultish followers – youthful "Heathens" inspired by his innovative speed concoctions, conspiracy theories, mandatory orgies and a rather grotesque dinner menu. Worlds collide when these colorful heroes and vicious villains are thrown together for the badass brawl-of-the-century.
