After initially investing in Demotix in 2011, the two companies began to work in partnership. Now Corbis has acquired Demotix outright.
In July 2011, Corbis acquired the LA based Splash News, which specialises in celebrity photography.
In September 2011, Digital Journal reported that Corbis and Associated Press would be working together in a cross-distribution partnership.
A few months ago Demotix launched a ‘news wire’ service in partnership with Corbis. Demotix is particularly strong in areas where it is difficult for the media to get to, such as war zones in third world countries. It has thousands of on the ground photojournalists who range from anyone with a camera on their mobile phone to professional photographers.
Demotix is a UK based news agency that was launched in 2009. Corbis is based in the U.S. and is owned by Bill Gates.
Demotix photojournalist Richard Milnes, who is based in Sydney, Australia, commented: “This is an excellent move for both Demotix and Corbis. Demotix contributors will benefit from Corbis’ international network of offices and sales contacts. The photojournalism sector is changing rapidly due to low barriers to entry (i.e. many people have access to a camera) and the increasing use of the Internet as a news source. Corbis is now well positioned to fully capitalise on this changing environment. Other more orthodox news agencies are starting to look like dinosaurs and may soon be made extinct.”
Corbis looks set to position itself as a competitor to more established news wire services such as Reuters and Getty.
"Today's announcement underscores our commitment to providing our media customers access to an exceptional selection of breaking news imagery -- from premium news sources to alternative coverage outside of the scope of the mainstream newswires," said Gary Shenk, CEO of Corbis. "Demotix helps build out Corbis' unmatched portfolio of news and entertainment imagery that cannot be found anywhere else."
