Johannesburg - Some things are hard to swallow. A Lebanese diamond smuggler that managed to swallow 220 polished diamonds was apprehended before he took flight from South Africa.
Some Lebanese have quite a reputation for diamond smuggling from African countries.
News 24 reported the South African Hawks apprehended a 25-year old Lebanese man as he attempted to board a flight to Dubai. According to the Daily Mail the man had swallowed diamonds worth £1.4 million.
Police received a tip off about the attempted smuggling and managed to detain the man at the airport. Police spokesman Paul Ramaloko said: "The man was ready to board the flight and had the diamonds on his person. Our officers were tipped off about his activities and detained him at the airport."
Police were able to recover the diamonds by giving the man laxatives. Ramaloko said: "The man was subjected to a thorough search and the diamonds were recovered. We do not know whether he had swallowed the diamonds before he came to the airport or during arrest."
