An Ethiopian maid who moved in with an Emirati family at Ramadan has been tortured to death by her female employer. The maid suffered daily beatings and died from infected burns, after having boiling water poured over her.
An unnamed Emirati woman has appeared in the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court accused of torturing her Ethiopian housemaid to death. Daily beatings were administered to the maid by her employer who considered the maid to be lazy, the
Ethiopian Review reported.
Addressing the court the alleged murderer admitting whipping the maid with wire, but denied pouring boiling water over her. She said:
"I only beat her up, I just wanted her to do the housework properly – I didn't mean to hurt or kill her."
The employer's son reported the maid's death to the police, while her daughter gave evidence against her. According to the
National the daughter told the court the maid was beaten daily and that her mother had rubbed pepper into the maid's eyes. Following the maid's death the alleged murderer asked her daughters to wear gloves to change the maid's bloody clothes. The accused woman will remain in custody until the next court hearing on Dec. 31.
