The 2012 MTV European Music Awards took place in Frankfurt, Germany Sunday evening. The ceremony was hosted by Project Runway host and model Heidi Klum.
While the EMAs take place in Europe every year, it definitely doesn't mean that European artists will clean house at the ceremony, Zap2it notes.
Of this year's award winners, only two were European; British boy band One Direction and French DJ David Guetta.
The big winners of the night were American singer Taylor Swift, Canadian popstar Justin Bieber, and One Direction, E! Online reports.
Swift won the award for Best Female performer, Best Live Performer, and Best Look.
Taylor also performed her hit song "We Are Never Getting Back Together," Zap2it reports.
The show included other performances from The Killers, No Doubt, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Rita Ora, E! Online reports.
Carly Jae Jepsen actually crowd surfed during her performance, surprising many as some consider music "cheesy," but proved Sunday night that she has a "rock chick" side to her as well, The Daily Mail reports.
South Korean pop star Psy won the award for Best Video for his hit "Gangnam Style," BBC News reports.
One Direction won the awards for Best New Act, Best Fans, and Best UK and Ireland Act, E! Online reports.
Newly single Justin Bieber won the awards for Best Male Act, Best Pop Act, and the World Stage award, but he was not in Europe to pick up his awards, BBC News reports.
Late R&B diva Whitney Houston was named Global Icon, the Huff Post reports.
Alicia Keys and Beyonce led a tribute dedicated to Whitney.
Other awards winners included Carl Rae Jepsen for Best song ("Call Me Maybe") and Best Push, Chinese singer and dancer, Han Keng for Best Worldwide Act, Best Alternative Act, Lana Del Ray, Best Hip-Hop, Nicki Minaj, Best Rock Act, Linkin Park, and Best Electronic Act, David Guetta, The Daily Mail reports.
