article imageEmma Stone swings for genuine romance in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Special

To portray Gwen Stacy in the cinematic Spider-Man reboot, the 'Superbad' actress relied on her intuitive acting instincts to ensure Gwen’s love for Peter Parker/Spider-Man (her reported real-life beau, Andrew Garfield) appeared authentic onscreen.
Surprisingly, when Emma Stone initially received word that director Marc Webb was interested in the actress for the female lead of the Spider-Man cinematic reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man, the 24-year-old star of such films as The Help, Zombieland, Superbad, Friends With Benefits and the upcoming Gangster Squad, believed she would be reading for a totally different role than the one she finally landed. "I always wanted to play Mary Jane, I thought Mary Jane was so great," Stone said of the character made famous by Kirsten Dunst in the Spider-Man trilogy of films that featured Tobey Maguire as the arachnid-like superhero. "But, then I got a call and they said, 'We'd like to you audition for the part of Gwen Stacy.' And I was like, 'Ugh. I don't know who Gwen Stacy is?' That was because I hadn't read the comic books growing up. But then, I looked into the story of Gwen, and I just fell in love with her story, because it is so incredibly epic and tragic."

Movie-lovers across the globe would also fall head over heels for the character of Gwen Stacy, as well as the Phoenix, Arizona-born Stone and the latest actor underneath the Spider-Man mask – Andrew Garfield – transforming The Amazing Spider-Man into one of the highest-grossing films of Summer 2012 (taking home an estimated $700 million U.S dollars in box office receipts). Not only did the superhero genre motion picture appeal to male audiences, but female movie-goers also flocked, en masse, to view the re-imagining of the Spider-Man mythos. "Spider-Man is a hero that both boys and girls, of all ages, have always been able to relate to," Stone explained about the web-slinging comic book crime-fighter's ability to swing across all gender and generational boundaries. "First off, he's the only teenage superhero, which is major. So, you can relate to him. Not to mention, he's bullied. Which is huge, for a girl or boy. And, the fact that he is bitten by a spider, in this kind of wish fulfillment thing – that he's able to fight back against the bullies when he wasn't able to before, is symbolism for kids – that they have so much power within them. To speak out, and to stand up for themselves. To stay unique, and to stay true to who they are. As Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) does. I think that's probably why it's so resonant with everyone – and has been for fifty years – and will continue to be."

Based on the Marvel comic book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, the Marc Webb-directed The Amazing Spider-Man focuses on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker legend. In addition to Emma Stone, the latest cinematic adaptation of the masked crime-fighter exploits also stars Andrew Garfield, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen and Sally Field. In The Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker (Garfield) is an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter must make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

This past June, Emma Stone sat down – in a luxurious suite in one of Manhattan's swank Upper East Side hotels – to discuss her role of Gwen Stacy, just days before the North American theatrical release of The Amazing Spider-Man. At the time, the news had yet to break that Stone and her leading man, Andrew Garfield, had allegedly become a real-life couple. According to several reports published through-out this past summer and fall, The Amazing Spider-Man costars became "close" during the making of the blockbuster and have remained that way ever since. While she was promoting the film, Stone made no outwardly candid comments about a personal relationship with Garfield. However, in retrospect, her near-swooning praise for the actor portraying Peter Parker/Spider-Man should have been a red flag indicating the two shared some sort of deep connection while making the film.

"Andrew is one of the best actors I've ever worked with," Stone lovingly declared during her tête-à-tête. "I instantly knew how much I could learn from him. And that really, really drew me to, you know, that challenge. Rising to meet him every day was something really exciting. It was a huge growing experience for me. And it was a combination of things. But like most of the other movies I've been a part of, with guys like Seth (Rogan, her Superbad costar), they were just cute."
To ensure that Gwen and Peter's budding love and attraction for one another appeared authentic on the silver screen, Stone revealed she put herself through an emotional metamorphosis to “unlearn” certain notions she had about the experience of first time love. "It kinda swept me off my feet,” Stone admitted in explaining her need to refine her own acting skills to appear as if Gwen was expressing genuine romantic feelings for Peter. “I wanted to experience that feeling of first love – before you know what it's like to get your heart completely shattered! You know, that life or death love, where you're like, 'I know what love is!' I wanted to feel that again. I wanted to unlearn, and go from the very beginning of, 'Oh my God. There's an attraction to another human being.' In a way, I never felt that before, the 'What is this!’ You know, that uncomfortable 'Ugh!' – I wanted to feel that again. So it was a matter of unlearning, and really becoming seventeen again. And just letting yourself be seventeen in those moments. It's fun, you should try it! It's really cool. It's pretty cool to feel that way, again."

The first onscreen kiss between Peter (Garfield) and Gwen (Stone) in The Amazing Spider-Man has been touted by many critics to be a legitimately “iconic” cinematic moment. Stone is practically at a true loss for words when asked about her thoughts on her character sealing the proverbial deal with the seemingly normal Peter Parker. “Obviously, there's no comparison there,” she offered on the subject of “the kiss.” “Of course, I thought about it because...I just did! Yeah, I thought about the kiss..."

When asked to explain the palpable onscreen electricity between herself and Garfield, she quickly interjected, "Can one explain chemistry?" When pressured to elaborate on the subject, Stone relented. "It's hard to (explain), because with any person in life that I've had chemistry with, it's hard to pin down exactly what it is,” she said openly. “Sometimes it either clicks, or it just doesn't. So it really is indefinable, it's exactly what they call it, you know? Um, it's something else entirely. It's some soul thing. I don't know? I don't know what it is?!"

Currently in pre-production, The Amazing Spiderman 2 – the first of two planned sequels to this box office blockbuster – is scheduled to begin filming in early-2013 for a tentative 2014 summer theatrical release. While The Amazing Spider-Man attracted fans of all ages, the core audience for the motion picture(s) is made up of preteens, tweeners and teenagers. With that in mind, one must wonder if Stone – who has reached a new level of celebrity stardom thanks to the success of The Amazing Spiderman – harbors a sense of a responsibility to her young fans or if she even considers herself a role model for kids. "I will say – and I could talk about this for a long time – I don't in any way, shape or form think that I am any type of a role model, or anything like that,” she replied when posed the question of being one. “But I think for whatever reason, when you're put into a public place, you have to figure out what that purpose is in your life. Why that may have happened, or what you can possibly do with something like that. I'm not political, and I'm not gonna talk about those kinds of things. I know that it's never gonna be my job as an actor to be championing any specific cause – except for originality. That's the one thing that I identify with, as maybe part of my responsibility per se.

“I know it's not my responsibility, and I know all of that,” she comfortably continueed. “But there's something that came with getting a Revlon contract, actually. When they approached me for the Revlon contract, I thought, 'Why in the world would I be approached for a beauty campaign?' because I had always been the funny girl. And that's not to put myself down. That was always the way my brain worked. Then, I thought about Diane Keaton for L'Oreal and Ellen Degeneres for Cover Girl, and how sometimes real beauty gets to be celebrated. Like, what's inside is what counts. You can still feel beautiful or put makeup on, but because it makes you feel good and not for anybody else, it was like, 'Well, if I have an opportunity to possibly reach people or reach young girls in a way that makes them feel like what they are. It's enough. Those elements of their personality that set them apart and that make them original, if they feel good about that in any way, if that affects one person, then that's a game changer.' That's something that I'm proud to be helpful in any way. And, in looking real. Or being a real person. Obviously, I have a stylist who puts me in clothes...and I have a hair and makeup artist who are doing those sorts of things. So there's all of that going on, too. I'm not eloquent right now, at all,” she said, followed by a playful laugh. “But yeah, I do feel a slight – not responsibility. But a privilege, to be able to speak to younger girls, and hopefully, make them feel like it's okay to be themselves."

Can you talk a bit about Gwen’s iconic thigh-highs she wears in the movie?
"Obviously, I'm a lot less voluptuous than Gwen, unfortunately! So...It didn't really go to those heights! (laughs) But you know, the signature headband, and the thigh-highs, all of that, was important to stay present. Right down to hair and makeup, we really tried to attain that as well – keep her realistic and still keep her, you know, earthbound. And I'm by no means a super-model or like an unattainable person. So that element of Gwen was a bit different than in the comic books."
A teenaged Peter Parker (Garfield) in The Amazing Spider-Man
A teenaged Peter Parker (Garfield) in 'The Amazing Spider-Man'
How so?
"Because she was such a beauty queen in the comic books. I'm a lot more...‘next door’ than she might be. I know she's not very hippie-ish in this, and that she won't be birthing Osborn's twins! (laughs) I don't think that's gonna be happening! But we did try to keep some of that moxie in there – some of that self-assuredness. I think it's important that she kind of took on that energy of being in charge, you know? Then, she's drawn to a male who is in kind of the same position as her police chief dad. A little Electra Complex thing going on."
How familiar were you, or not, with all the scientific jargon going on in The Amazing Spider-Man?
"That's a great question. My aunt and uncle had a hand in creating the cervical cancer vaccine, and I've always been fascinated by what they did. I, myself – this is gonna sound a little bit strange to you – but I had really, really bad acne, a couple of years ago. And it was during a really stressful time period. So, I started going online, trying to figure out what causes this kind of thing. I didn't do Accutane for it, but they took us to these labs. This was the first time in my life that I've really been angry about not going to college. I went to these labs, and I was fascinated. I knew what they were talking about. Like, the same thing that causes acne, causes diabetes, and they're proving that stress has a link. I was studying regeneration, and we looked into stem cells, because they're finding ways to wire it to beat a human heart. I was fascinated, and I was like, 'What do I need to do to intern?' You need to be a college graduate. I was like, 'But I know what you're talking about! I get it!' And it made me so upset. I was like, 'F**k! I mean, this sucks! I can learn, I can learn. I swear.' So, now I've gone on my tangent about the word 'smart!' Which had really been bothering me for the past year! I don't like the word 'smart.' anymore. Because what does 'smart' mean? Does it mean that you're able to learn, or does it mean you graduated college? I didn't graduate college, but it doesn't mean that I'm not smart. So, I really, really, got so interested in biology. That was one of the most exciting parts of this (acting) process, was learning about medicine – regeneration, stem cells and all of it. It just expanded my mind in so many ways. So, now I'm gonna take biology classes. Now, what's amazing is you can do it at home! It doesn't mean I'm not smart...Ha!" (laughs)

Which is your favorite scene in The Amazing Spider-Man?
"Where we're asking each other out, but not! (laughs) Then, there's that awful scene where I have to keep my dad out of my room when Andrew (Peter Parker) was in there with me. You know, when you give me an inch, it's not good. (laughs) So, I was like, 'What is the one thing that would keep a dad out of his teenage daughter's room?' Anything related to hormones. I knew in an instant, from my own life experience. That you can be like, 'Sorry, I know, okay! I'll let you go.' Dads don't want to talk about that!"
Were you really rigged up for all that high-flying swinging Gwen has to do with Spider-Man?
"Yeah, yeah. We swung. We were swinging!" (laughs)

Are you afraid of heights?
"No! That was awesome. I really loved it, yeah. Thankfully, I'm not afraid of heights, or that would have been horrific. It would have been awful, actually. Because you're so out of control. But no, I loved it. Other than the bruising, I loved it. But, harnesses bruise! Yikes." (laughs)

Sunset Boulevard
Paramount has finally released one of the studio’s most iconic films – newly restored and in sparkling high definition for the first time ever. Sunset Boulevard is a fitting release to continue Paramount’s centennial celebration, Billy Wilder’s seminal classic continues to enthrall audiences with its bizarre and tragic tale of Hollywood’s dark side. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and winner for Best Writing, Best Art Direction and Best Music, Sunset Boulevard was named by the American Film Institute as #12 on its list of the Greatest American Movies. In the classic film, William Holden portrays struggling young screenwriter Joe Gillis, and Gloria Swanson is Norma Desmond, an aging silent film queen. Together, they created two of the screen’s most memorable characters, delivering unforgettable performances amidst the dramatic light and shadow of John Seitz’s evocative cinematography. Not only a cinematic masterpiece, Sunset Boulevard also captures some extraordinary moments in Hollywood history, including Cecil B. DeMille on the set of Samson and Delilah, which was erected in a soundstage still in use on the Paramount lot. Director Erich von Stroheim, who had directed Swanson previously in real life, appears as Norma Desmond’s butler and former director. Various notable figures make appearances in the film as themselves, including actors Buster Keaton, Hedda Hopper, Anna Q. Nilsson and H.B. Warner. And, of course, there are the iconic images of Hollywood itself, including the well-known shot of Paramount’s legendary gates. The main objective of the restoration effort was to remain faithful to the distinctive look created by the director and cinematographer. Stark shadows and darkness occasionally cut by the bright light of a film projector are themselves essential in telling the disturbing story of madness and obsession. The restoration team secured a vintage print made at the time of release from the Library of Congress to view and study the tones and extensively researched documentation from the production to accurately present the director’s original vision. Although none of the original nitrate materials survive, the

restoration team conducted a worldwide search for the earliest generation elements, ultimately using an acetate 35mm duplicate negative as a primary source for scanning at 4K to create the highest picture quality possible. In addition, work done on the film’s original mono soundtrack back in 2001-2002 was expanded upon. As with the picture, no original sound materials survive, but a variety of source elements were analyzed, transferred, digitally cleaned and incorporated into the final restoration – including optical soundtrack negatives, music and effects tracks and partial music master materials. Sunset Boulevard Blu-ray Bonus Features: Commentary by Ed Sikov, author of On Sunset Blvd: The Life and Times of Billy Wilder; "Sunset Boulevard: The Beginning"; "Sunset Boulevard: A Look Back"; "The Noir Side of Sunset Boulevard"; "Sunset Boulevard Becomes a Classic"; "Two Sides of Ms. Swanson"; "Stories of Sunset Boulevard"; "Mad About the Boy: A Portrait of William Holden"; "Recording Sunset Boulevard"; "The City of Sunset Boulevard"; "Franz Waxman and the Music of Sunset Boulevard"; Morgue Prologue Script Pages; “The Paramount-Don’t-Want-Me Blues” (HD): a never-before-released Deleted Scene; Hollywood Location Map; "Behind the Gates: The Lot"; "Edith Head: The Paramount Years"; "Paramount in the ‘50s"; Galleries; Production; The Movie; Publicity and the Theatrical Trailer (HD). From Hollywood To Dollywood
On the fumes of a dream, twin brothers Gary and Larry Lane have written a script with a plum role for one of their idols: country legend Dolly Parton.
