General Allen, 58 and married, was nominated in October by President Barack Obama to be Supreme Allied Commander Europe and commander of the U.S. European Command. He was the four-star U.S. commander of the war in Afghanistan. His nomination is on hold, but Allen will remain commander of U.S. forces and the NATO International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) in Afghanistan.
The FBI on Sunday turned over to Pentagon lawyers 20,000 to 30,000 pages of emails exchanged by the two from 2010 to 2012, according to Politico
... " the scandal involves two of the biggest stars of the U.S. national-security establishment, and two of the commanders in America’s longest war."
General Petraeus was forced to resign due to his mistress, biographer Paula Broadwell, sending threatening inappropriate communication emails to the mistress of General Allen, who was also a friend of Petraeus. It seems that Broadwell viewed Jill Kelley as a romantic rival.
General Allen took over General Petraeus's position as commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan in July, and was scheduled to take office in early 2013, pending Senate confirmation.
General Allen has a high profile that is also the most sensitive in the entire military, for several reasons .... which makes the emails that much more viable for trouble. It is also a time when General Allen is concerned over the fate of the troop-training program
in Afghanistan, which is seriously in doubt.
* He consults with President Obama
* He consults with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Afghan President Hamid Karzai regarding the preparation to transition control of the country’s security to Afghans
* He controls the U.S. 68,000 troops in Afghanistan, where the total NATO forces number about 100,000
To add more spice to the picture, an FBI agent that was investigating the Petraeus affair
sent pictures of himself without his upper clothing to Jill Kelley. He has been banned from the FBI probe.
