Italian police report they have arrested nine doctors for performing unauthorized experiments on patients. Included in the investigation are a dozen medical equipment companies.
According to the Washington Post, one physician has been jailed and the others are under house arrest.
The arrests came about following an investigation that started over a year ago after consumer groups anonymously began reported suspicious deaths of two patients at the Polyclinic hospital in the northern city of Modena.
Other charges against the physicians include fraud, criminal association and embezzlement. The inquiry into the deaths spans 2009 to 2011 and includes a total of 67 suspects.
The BBC reported local police seized 1m euros from the suspect’s bank accounts.
Six foreign firms that supply medical equipment are also under investigation.
The AFB news agency wrote “Investigators "uncovered a well-oiled organization” that “knowingly” used faulty equipment and raised money under false pretenses to fund the patient experiments.
