New York - Today New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed an emergency order to ration gasoline. The ration system will impact all five city boroughs and will operate on the odd-even license plate system for gas purchases.
Several days after New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie initiated a gas rationing order in 12 northern N.J. counties, New York City is following suit. According to a press release issued today, Mayor Bloomberg signed the gas rationing order which will go into effect at 6 a.m. Friday morning.
The mayor made the announcement at City Hall on Thursday.
“Last week’s storm hit the fuel network hard – and knocked out critical infrastructure needed to distribute gasoline,” Mayor Bloomberg said. “Even as the region’s petroleum infrastructure slowly returns to normal, the gasoline supply remains a real problem for thousands of New York drivers. Earlier today, I signed an emergency order to alternate the days that drivers can purchase gas, which is the best way to cut down the lines and help customers buy gas faster.”
The intention of the fuel rationing is to reduce the excessive wait lines at gas stations that has been occurring since Hurricane Sandy made landfall 11 days ago. The tri-state area has been experiencing a severe gas shortage over the past week with motorists crossing state lines in hope of finding fuel.
How the rationing system will work is that motorists with even-numbered license plate numbers, including "0", can buy gasoline on even days (i.e. Nov. 10, Nov. 12, etc.); those with odd-numbered plates can buy on odd dates. Vehicles that end in a letter or other character are assigned to odd days.
The press release noted that commercial and emergency vehicles are exempt, along with buses, paratransit vehicles, limousines, taxis and Medical Doctor (MD) designated plates.
The full text of the executive order issued by Mayor Bloomberg can be seen here [PDF].
According to Newsday, Long Island will have a rationing program in Suffolk and Nassau Counties effective 5 p.m. on Friday.
