Wigan - Bradley Wiggins, Tour de France and Olympic champion, is in hospital with broken ribs after a traffic accident. Wiggins was knocked off his bike by a white van last night outside a petrol station near his Lancashire home.
According to the Lancashire Evening Post, Wiggins was knocked off his bike by a white van as it pulled off the petrol station forecourt. Both police and ambulance services were requested. Wiggins was taken to hospital.
A Lancashire Police spokesperson told BBC Sports:
Bradley has suffered broken ribs but the driver of the vehicle is not injured.
The petrol station attendant, Yasmin Smith, who went to Wiggins aid, told Sky News:
There was a loud screeching of tyres and a rather big bang. A customer said there'd been an accident so I shot out to see a gentleman on the pavement.
He did look in a lot of pain with his ribs more than anything - he kept holding himself. His colour changed in his face and he was deteriorating within minutes with the pain.
I didn't realise who he actually was until he got into the ambulance - I was more concerned about his health.
According to the Guardian, the driver of the white van is helping the police with their inquiries.
Team Sky, for whom Wiggins rides, issued a statement. It says Wiggins was kept in
hospital overnight for observation but the injuries he has sustained are not thought to be serious and he is expected to make a full and speedy recovery.
It is thought that Wiggins had only just resumed his training after an autumn break.
