The three family members were granted probation by the court after entering guilty pleas to the charges which included unlawful imprisonment, disorderly conduct and assault. Mohammed Altameemi, his wife Yusra Farhan, and daughter Tabarak Altameemi, were spared a prison sentence for the honor beating of Aiya Altameemi.
As Digital Journal
reported Aiya Altameemi was beaten and padlocked to a bed because, as Farhan explained:
"She was talking to a boy and our culture says no boyfriends. We have to respect our culture."
Aiya also suffered burns from her mother and sister for refusing to participate in an arranged marriage to a 38-year-old man. Two separate incidences of abuse occurred in November 2011 and February 2012.
Describing her ordeal to school officials who arranged her hospitalization Aiya said her family was "trying to protect her and they want her to be a virgin for an arranged marriage.” (Al Arabiya
She defended her mother, saying
“We are Muslim...She doesn't do nothing wrong. That's our culture."
The family, who had been in America for three years at the time of the abuse, claimed they did not realize American law prevents parents from beating their children. Farhan said “You have to respect my culture."
