Washington - President Barack Obama has won a second term in the White House having won the key swing states of Ohio, New Hampshire, Colorado, Wisconsin, Iowa and Nevada.
President Obama's win in the crucial battleground state of Ohio, along with his victories in Iowa and Oregon, shot him beyond the required 270 electoral votes, Fox News reports.
Indications that Obama was heading for victory came early with wins in New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Michigan, while Romney predictably swept the conservative southern states building up his electoral vote count.
Latest projections indicate Obama has won in Illinois, California, Hawaii, Washington, Minnesota, New Mexico, Maine, New York, Delaware, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont and the District of Columbia.
Romney is the projected winner in Utah, Montana, Arizona, Missouri, Idaho, Texas, Louisiana, Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Arkansas, West Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Indiana and Kentucky.
According to ABC News, celebrations erupted in Obama's hometown of Chicago, New York's Time Square and outside the White House, while Romney's Boston headquarters went silent. ABC News comments:
"The race is a validation, if not an overwhelming mandate, in support of the president's policies of the last four years, which included a major overhaul of the health-care system and a draw-down of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"Obama built a coalition of young people, minorities, and college educated women and won by turning out supporters with a carefully calibrated ground operation to get out the vote in crucial states like Ohio, Iowa and Wisconsin."
The results mark the end of what would be remembered as the most hotly contested presidential race in recent US history.
Both candidates are history-making in their respective rights. Romney is the first Mormon presidential nominee and Obama, the first black president of the United States.
