Athens - A Greek television reporter was allegedly beaten by members of Golden Dawn (Chrysi Avgi) as he attempted to photograph the raids against immigrants that took place late on Saturday.
Michael Tezari, a reporter for TV channel SKAI, was attempting to report on the demonstrations against immigrants which took place following the stabbing of a Greek man by immigrants. According to Ekathimerini 12 people were arrested in the violence that ensued as local people and Golden Dawn members protested in the central Athens area of Aghios Panteleimonas.
During the protests the windows of immigrants' houses and shops were smashed.
Ekathimerini reported Tezari was surrounded by a group as he used he used his mobile telephone to photograph the events. Tezari was beaten on the head and had his mobile and Press ID card stolen. Other journalists in the area allege the police stood by doing nothing as their colleague was attacked.
SKAI journalists today released a statement condemning the attack, saying: "This is part of trying to intimidate journalists to limit freedom of expression and media manipulation."
