article imageDiner refuses to tip, claims she is a 'single mom'

By Greta McClain     Nov 4, 2012 in Odd News
After a woman and her children enjoyed a pricey meal at a restaurant, she declines to leave a tip, but not because the service or food was bad. She wrote on the receipts she is a "single mom."
According to a Huffington Post report, the woman and children go into a restaurant and run up a bill for $138.35. After paying for the meal with a debit or credit card, the woman signs the receipt and leaves a note in the tip section saying "single mom sorry". She follows up with a note at the bottom of the receipt saying "thank you it was great".
The photo of the receipt has gone viral and has left many people, including single mothers, outraged.
A Strollerderby blog points out that raising children alone is stressful and can be a financial drain. However, if money is tight, the reasonable thing to do is cut expenses, including not going out and buying a $138 meal.
The blog also points out that there is a real possibility that whomever signed the receipt may not be a single mom. Assuming the person is truly a single mother, there is no legitimate reason to spend that much in a restaurant if you can’t afford to tip.
Reaction to the receipt on Imgur is equally critical. DezBechard posted:
I'm a single mom. Spending $140 on ONE meal, not even once.

As a single mom, $138 is two weeks worth of groceries, one trip to the indoor pool, and a frozen yogurt for my two boys!
One person posted on Reddit:
"I'm a single Mom, and this is bullshit. What exactly are you teaching your kids? ... Dear Parents of all kinds - your kids are watching you and learning."

"Wow...when I was a single mom it was McDonalds for us, not someplace that cost over $140.... Now I am retired and live on $10K a year and no matter where I am, I give them still a 20% tip.

“I’m sure $140 could have gotten you and your kids a week worth of groceries, but instead you spend it one one meal?! For shame! Why is it so hard for people to understand what I’ve been saying over and over? The point of this post wasn’t to complain. It was to show that someone was ridiculous enough to come into a place, and use the fact that they are a single mom to not tip. Then to say everything was great.”
Whether or not the person who did this was a single mother or not, the idea of enjoying an expensive meal such as this and then refusing to leave a tip because of financial hardship is clearly not acceptable in the eyes of most people.
