article imageOp-Ed: Was Hurricane Sandy God’s judgment on America?

By Eliot Elwar     Nov 3, 2012 in World
Today, Hurricane Sandy leaves dozens dead and billions in damages as New York City begins recovery, Israeli students pray for the Sandy’s victims, while Muslim clerics say Sandy was God's punishment on America.
From Israel National News and Fox News: After Hurricane Sandy’s destruction, U.S. residents of the areas began looking towards rebuilding efforts, while many people remain without power, neighborhoods remain scattered with debris, and many transportation systems remain closed. Recently at least 55 people had been reported dead as a result of this violent storm, which will cost billions of dollars in damage. New York City buses resumed their schedule and the New York Stock Exchange prepared to reopen its trading floor again, but it became clear that restoring the region to some semblance of normalcy could take weeks for communities that were the hardest hit. New York City Michael Bloomberg said: "We will get through the days ahead by doing what we always do in tough times - by standing together, shoulder to shoulder, ready to help a neighbor, comfort a stranger and get the city we love back on its feet.”
From ARUTZ-7: Israeli students prayed for the US victims of Hurricane Sandy. Students read Psalms as prayers for those affected by this devastating storm in each of the 100 schools affiliated with the AMIT educational network. AMIT director Dr. Amnon Eldar explained that for many students, the prayers were a way of giving back to those who have helped them. He said: “We have many students and many of them are in Sderot, Ashkelon, and Be’er Sheva, and when they are in danger from rocket attacks, Jewish Americans pray for them, support them, and come to visit. They help and contribute, because they are our brothers, our flesh and blood. Many citizens of the US are good friends of the Israeli State, and when they are in trouble, we feel a real need to pray for them.”
From Israel National News: Muslim clerics claimed that Hurricane Sandy was divine punishment from God. In Egypt, radical cleric Wagdi Ghoneim described the hurricane as revenge from God for the anti-Islamic film that sparked violent protests across the Muslim world in September. ‘Some people wonder about the hurricane in America and its causes,’ Ghoneim wrote on Twitter. ‘In my opinion, this is revenge by God for harming his beloved Prophet Muhammad. He added, alluding to the film. Ghoneim's remarks were translated by The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI). A Twitter response to Ghoneim compared Hurricane Sandy to a divine wind sent to destroy a sinful American nation.
Analysis
Hurricane Sandy was a tremendous tragedy in American and the Caribbean Islands. We should all pray for all the victims, while we help those who have suffered physical or property damages due to Hurricane Sandy’s destructive force. We should not forget those living in the Caribbean Islands. As we discuss why God would allow such a tragedy to destroy lives, we must reflect on how fortunate some of us are to have escaped Sandy’s wrath.
