Yesterday Gov. Chris Christie signed an executive order that rationed gas in 12 New Jersey counties. As many areas in New Jersey and New York are struggling with gas shortages, the governor declared a plan that would limit when people could buy gas.
The 12 counties impacted are Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Morris, Monmouth, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren. The plan takes effect at noon on Saturday.
The governor's executive order outlines that motorists who have license plates that end in an even number can buy gas on even-numbered calendar days (i.e. Nov. 4, Nov. 6, Nov. 8) and those motorists with car tags that end in an odd number can purchase gas on odd numbered calendar days; the odd days also include those license plates not ending in a number, reported KSDK.
According to CNN, plans are in the works to get the badly-needed gasoline into the state, however in the meantime, the gas shortage is causing substantial problems.
"This system will ease the strain on those gas stations still operating, while we work to bring more online for the public to access fuel, in a manner that is fair, easy to understand and less stressful," Christie said. The order also says restrictions extend until the governor lifts his declaration of a state of emergency, reported Business Week.
Christie and Attorney General Jeff Chiesa pledged to "aggressively and vigorously enforce" the order, and the governor warned that violators "will be prosecuted to the fullest extent permitted," reported KSDK.
Digital Journal spoke last night to a Northern New Jersey resident who confirmed the problems residents are experiencing caused by the gas shortages.
This situation brings back memories for many individuals of the 1970s energy crisis that was characterized by long gas lines and hours of waiting as gas was also rationed according to automobile license plate tags.
