With death toll mounting and thousands of homes and families devastated; with Americans counting their losses in millions in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, sexy glamour girl Nana Gouvea
and her husband, Carlos Keyes, could feel so insulated against the pervasive tragedy around them that they went out amid the ruins snapping "seductively glamorous" photos of the model which she displayed proudly on her Facebook page.
Ms. Gouvea, in collaboration with her husband, appeared altogether undeterred by the sober and reflective atmosphere in the aftermath of Sandy.
The photos show Gouvea, who according to the Daily Mail
, has appeared on the pages of Playboy, striking poses next to splintered trunks, cars smashed under fallen trees and storm ravaged streets.
Her show of unbelievable insensitivity has sparked a befitting outcry with comments disparaging her apparent lack of respect for the climbing death toll and millions of families displaced by the storm, The Huffington Post
reports several Twitter users dubbed her “Miss Tragedy." Brazilian netizens mocked her in Portuguese, tweeting “Nana Gouvea, the apple of the eye of the hurricane,” and “Nana: the lady of the apocalypse.”
mocked her photos; "The turmoil following a devastating natural disaster is a great opportunity to get out there and try poses, angles, and wardrobe choices you normally wouldn't. This is a time for introspection and re-examining your personal style. Also a great time to stomp all over cars and things."
posted a satirical “Guide to Posing for Glamour Shots in the Aftermath of a Devastating Natural Disaster.”
Her extraordinary tactlessness was mocked in a Facebook
page and a tumblr
account titled “Nana Gouvea em Desastres” or "Nana Gouvea in Disaster." The mocking photos (see below
) show her striking poses amid tragic scenes, both historical and contemporary, including the sinking of the Titanic, the Hindenburg disaster, the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. She is shown against the backdrop of a fire disaster. She is shown seductively posed in the ruins of Hiroshima and while watching the Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc, self-immolate in Vietnam, 1963.
Other photos show her in a scene from The Exorcist
and in the final scene of The Blair Witch Project
. Yet another spoofing photo places her in the scene of the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II.
The Daily Mail
reports the Brazilian glamour girl displayed the extent of her emotional insularity in the midst of tragedy when, after the initial outcry, she gushingly extolled her "love of Hurricanes" in an interview with the Spanish magazine EGO
, speaking of Hurricane Sandy as occasioning a celebration of romance between her and her husband, bringing them even closer together. She said proudly: "We actually spent most of the time in bed," and as if she hadn't said enough, she added: "It’s very romantic and today I will open a bottle of wine.”(!)
Gouvea told EGO
that she and her husband first met when Hurricane Irene hit the East Coast last August. She gushed: "It was my first trip to New York. We were in his apartment, watching movies, cooking."
comments incredulously: "Walk around your neighborhood to find an image of gross devastation. Position yourself within it alluringly... Are those the downed limbs of uprooted trees, or pockets of lush greenery inside a tropical rain forest, over which you reign, as princess?"
Yet, the incident may have served its intended end for Gouvea. The previously little-known model has had her moment of "fame," or is it infamy?
reports she tried to defend herself, saying that her photos should not cause offense as she was fully clothed at the time and she had not tried to sexualize the disaster.
