article imageOp-Ed: What's behind the current Romney surge?

By Stan Crouch     Oct 31, 2012 in Politics
Obama's campaign is panicking as poll after poll slips away towards Romney. States like Virginia. Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Florida seem to be heading Romney's way like osmosis - from the ground up.
A closer look at key voting blocks tells the tale. Women, younger voters, the elderly and the all important independent voters are all moving away from Obama disillusioned with 4 years of economic stagnation, spiraling mammoth debt and out-of-control spending and government growth while jobs vanish and taxes escalate. The economic picture is more barren than the artic tundra but that is not the only reasons for the shifting tides of political discontent.
A feeling of betrayal has taken hold, born of distrust of a leader so self possessed and secretive as to erode confidence at a very basic level. It's like the Wizard of Oz where a voice says 'pay no attention to the man behind the curtain', who desperately turns wheels trying to dazzle with shooting flames and holographic images in order to fool the observer into ignoring reality for the glitter of the side-show.
Somewhere along the line, the observer got wise to the charade. That is what, in this observer's view, has happened with the shift away from Obama. The charlatan's tricks no longer mask the reality that has been visited upon the average American. It's not just the rising commodities prices (a result of the falling value of the US dollar) or the shutdown of the private sector in response to crippling government intrusion or even the looming prospect of economic collapse as the specter of total government control and mismanagement of socialized health care and the calamity of foreign affairs of a rudderless foreign policy driven by anti-American values becomes clear. No, it is something more sinister, more basal not quite definable. It is an attack on every individual, their sovereignty, their way of life by something not seen but felt.
Teleprompters, Armani suits and the ever present "ah shucks" delivery of the snake oil salesman has finally registered with those who don't study the tea leaves and economic trends. It is a feeling, a dread and it cannot be ignored. For self protection the voter is recoiling at the unseen danger that is all about them. No fabricated veneer can stand forever and key blocks of voters are coming out of their stupor shaken to the core by reality. And for those die hard ideologues who rationalize creeping statism and Keynesian economics, the effects of the economic downslide is someone else's fault, never their hero and so that block is set in stone oblivious to reality. But the sandcastle of illusion built by the present administration is about to experience a tide of discontent that will wash it away. Thank God and the founders for a system built such that major mistakes like that of 2008 can be corrected by the will of the voter. It is being foretold in the polls that a reckoning will occur in just 7 days. Maybe it's simply that the events of the past 4 years are finally registering. In any event polls report on trends and it's obvious that we are seeing it unfold in real time.
