In discussing Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh's romantic comedy about the world of male strippers, Matthew recalls what it was like going nearly-nude for the cameras, and Channing, a former stripper himself, recounts the origins of 'Magic Mike.'
"Out of all the things I've had to do for my movies having to strip and dance onstage was one of the larger leaps of faith I've ever made," jokingly admits Texas-born actor Matthew McConaughey about having to completely disrobe and gyrate for an over-stimulated group of women in Magic Mike, the Steven Soderbergh-directed romantic comedy set in a male strip club. "Before going out on stage to dance for the first time, I was very, very nervous. Even if I wasn’t taking my clothes off, I’d be nervous. But knowing I had to strip down was completely nerve-wracking. After doing it once, though, I wanted to get up there and do it again and again...it was a heck of a lot of fun," he says with a huge grin.
Matthew McConaughey bares it all (almost) in 'Magic Mike'
In Magic Mike (now available in a Blu-ray Combo Pack and for Digital Download), McConaughey portrays Dallas, the owner, emcee and part-time dancer at the fictional Tampa-based Club Xquisite – a ladies' nite club that features a riotous, temperature-rising all-male dance revue. McConaughey – who has starred in such diverse hit films as The Wedding Planner, A Time To Kill, Sahara and We Are Marshall – has long been considered one of Hollywood's top male sex symbols. But, the legendary "hunk" confesses that before filming began, he started to have second thoughts about the role and was more than a tad worried about displaying his practically naked, chiseled, muscular, 42-year-old body in a major motion picture for the whole world to see. “It’s one thing to do a movie and go shirtless from time to time, but taking it all off, expect for basically a thong, is a whole different animal,” McConaughey admits.

However, it was only after he received a blessing from – his then, incredibly supportive longtime fiancée and father of his two young children – model Camilla Alves, assuring Matthew she was fine with him baring his buns for cinematic posterity, that McConaughey allowed himself to relax. “Heck, she’s the one who gave me a big thumbs up and said, ‘Go for it, baby!’,” he fondly remembers about Alves' stamp of approval. “My wife (the pair finally tied the knot in early June) even showed up for my first stripping scene, and she wasn’t jealous at all. I think Camilla even helped to get the gals in the club even more excited.”
Matthew McConaughey in 'Magic Mike'
McConaughey performed his initial stripping scene in front of a group 300 wildly enthusiastic, screaming female extras. While filming his almost X-rated dance routine, the overzealous group of gals that he bumped and grinded for began grabbing at his nearly-nude body and almost tore off his tiny g-string. “Luckily, I’m in good shape, so I’m quick, and I can duck and roll,” he says laughingly about nearly having his manhood exposed. “The women in the strip club audience scenes went crazy during the dances.” Surprisingly, the general mood among the dollar bill-tucking female extras changed dramatically once the scene was done and in the can – going from ravenous to maternal. “When I finished, they became motherly when Steven (Soderbergh) yelled ‘Cut,’” he continues. “That’s when they calmed down, and I could hear them saying, ‘That was a good one. You did great with that one move. Do you need to sit down? Do you need a bottle of water?’ It was wild.”
Channing Tatum as Mike in 'Magic Mike'
Of course, McConaughey’s crazed experience was all too familiar to his costar, Channing Tatum, who also co-produced Magic Mike, which is very loosely based on Tatum’s pre-leading man days as a male dancer. “Look, I was a stripper, so I know, firsthand, how crazy it can get when you have a group of drunk or tipsy woman sticking money down your crotch – believe me, anything can happen,” Tatum says with a chuckle.
Channing Tatum takes centerstage as Mike in 'Magic Mike'
A one-time print model (Dolce & Gabbana, Abercrombie & Fitch, Giorgio Armani) and commercial actor (Pepsi, Mountain Dew), Channing Tatum – who has shot to seemingly overnight stardom with his roles in box office moneymakers like The Vow, 21 Jump Street, Dear John and Step Up – has no regrets about the time he spent on dance club stages, ripping off his clothes and grooving to the music for grateful women begging for his attention (and body). “I’m not at all ashamed of having been a stripper,” Tatum proudly admits. “I mean, everybody knows somebody or has been that person who has asked themselves, ’What do I do now that I’ve finished high school or college?’ Usually, like me, you have a dream that you are working towards, but you have to do other jobs to get to this dream.
Tatum in a dance sequence from 'Magic Mike'
“I was 18 years old, and I worked three jobs and stripping was just one of them,” he continues. “I really enjoyed performing. It was my first performing job, and I really liked to dance, but I didn’t really love taking the clothes off. That whole world was a very dark world, we didn’t even scratch the surface of how dark it can get and how slippery a slope it can be. I finally got out, and I kept working in clubs. But, I just put on shows at one nightclub, and I didn’t get naked. For me, stripping was a means to an end. It got me to where I am today, so I have certainly have no regrets about those days.”
Tatum + McConaughey in a scene from 'Magic Mike'
Not all male strippers are as lucky as Tatum, though, and the 32-year-old, Alabama-born actor is all too familiar with their heartbreaking tales of woe. “I knew a lot of guys who kind of fell into dancing, they had fun and made a lot of money, but years ticked on while the party was happening," he reveals. "Then, seven years later, they look at themselves in the mirror and go, ‘I don’t have much to show for all of it, I’m not any closer to my dream. I got sidetracked. What do I do now?‘ Believe me, that happens to a lot of people in that business. I wasn’t going to let my dreams slip through my fingers, so I knew when it was time to move on from stripping.”
Alex Pettyfer and Channing Tatum in 'Magic Mike'
Tatum says he’s never tried to hide his stripper past from anyone, not even his wife of three years, actress Jenna Dewan, whom he met on the set of Step Up. “My wife married a stripper, so she knew what she was getting into,” he adds with a huge grin. “She made truth and complete honesty a prerequisite for our marriage. That was fine with me, because I had no problem telling her about my stripping. She’s always been cool with it. She even loves the fact that they made a movie about it.”
Steven Soderbergh directs "the guys" of Club Xquisite in 'Magic Mike'
Tatum had been thinking about a making a motion picture like Magic Mike even before making his first feature film, Coach Carter. Having been a male dancer, Tatum instinctively felt there was real box office potential in a unique, funny and entertaining movie set in the world of male strippers. It was only after Tatum casually mentioned his idea for a film about his former profession to Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, the Oceans 11 trilogy, Erin Brockovich) that it became more than simply wishful thinking. “After I told Steven all about it, he was like, ‘Let’s do it,’” Tatum recalls. “That’s how Magic Mike came to be.”
Channing Tatum as Mike in 'Magic Mike'
Shortly before our mid-June 2012 interview, just a week before its North American theatrical release – two former male strippers who had worked with Channing, when he was just starting out as a fifty-dollar a night dancer at a Florida club, told the gossip news show TMZ that he had allegedly stolen their life stories for the plot of Magic Mike. Channing denies he borrowed anything from his old pals and insists the film is neither biographical or autobiographical. "Those guys have been trying to make money off of me since I got into this business," he says about his former stripping coworkers. "They tried to sell video of me, that, thank God, Steven Soderbergh saw (on YouTube), and we made a movie about it. I don’t want to say anything bad about them, because they're part of the reason why I think this world is so interesting. They're very interesting, intriguing and bizarre characters, and I'm thankful for weird people out there. You should watch their YouTube videos -- it’s entertaining.
McConaughey as Dallas in 'Magic Mike'
"Honestly, there's nothing that's factual in this whole movie other than that I was an 18-year-old kid and went into this world, and I dropped out of college from playing football and was living on my sister's couch," he continues. "There's not one character that I took from my real life, this is just a world that I went into, and I had a perspective on. We created everything from a fictional place."
Pettyfer, McConaughey + Tatum are front and center in a dance sequence from 'Magic Mike'
In the seductive romantic comedy, Channing Tatum portrays Magic Mike, an entrepreneur with many talents and loads of charm. Mike spends his days pursuing the American dream, from roofing houses to designing furniture. But at night, he’s just magic. The hot headliner in an all-male revue, Magic Mike has been rocking the stage at Club Xquisite for years with his original style and over-the-top dance moves. Just as another summer begins to heat up, he takes a young dancer (Alex Pettyfer, I Am Number Four) under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women and making easy money. During this time, an intriguing new woman (Cody Horn, End Of Watch) enters his life, causing Mike to think twice about his future as a dancer. The ensemble cast of Magic Mile also includes the dancing and stripping talents of Matt Bomer (White Collar), Joe Manganiello (True Blood), Kevin Nash (The Longest Yard), Adam Rodriguez (CSI: Miami) and Gabriel Iglesias (Stand-Up Revolution).
The male dancers of Club Xquisite perform a military strip number in 'Magic Mike'
Enduring exhaustive months of dance and movement training, in addition to constant, countless choreography lessons, Tatum says that his costars who portray his co-dancers at Club Xquisite expertly mastered how to move and gyrate like real-life male strippers. “I’m really proud of them, and I respect these guys for jumping into the throng with both feet,” Tatum beams. “I’ve done it before, but I can’t image what it was like for these guys. Luckily, everyone just committed and went for it. I wish we had had time in the movie to show everyone’s dance numbers, because everyone worked so hard on them. I mean, it’s a humbling thing to be left with very little to the imagination when you are in front of 300 screaming women.”
Steven Soderbergh directs Tatum in a scene from 'Magic Mike'
Thanks to the magic of Blu-ray, fans of Magic Mike can now see every actor’s full dance routines they performed for the film, in their entirety, in the Special Features section of the Blu-ray Combo Pack for the film. Since only snippets of each number were used in the final theatrical release of Magic Mike, director Steven Soderbergh felt that McConaughey, Bomer, Manganiello, Pettyfer, Nash, Rodriguez and Iglesias deserved to have their exquisite dancing and stripping skills see the light of day. Soderbergh, however, does warn that these sequences, played back to back, may not be everyone’s cup of tea – especially for meek and prude viewers. “All the guys worked really, really hard on this film, so I wanted everyone to be able to see what all they did,” Soderbergh says of the Blu-ray special feature.
Matt Bomer (with Alex Pettyfer) leads a stripping dance number in 'Magic Mike'
“We edited together the full-length versions of all the routines and some people found them pretty disturbing,” the Academy Award-winner added. “Initially, we sent them to the studio and the lady there said, 'I really like these a lot, but it’s not for men. Actually, it made me really uncomfortable to watch them.’ To watch them all, back to back, some people can't handle it, but most of the fans of the movie will probably love them. At least, I hope so.”
"I think some people will not be into the back-to-back dance sequences, because they all end the same way, with pelvic gyrations – they start clothed and end naked – there is not any cool editing happening, it's just good old raw dancing," McConaughey interjects. "Everyone is really great in their own dance numbers. I'm really impressed with how hard everyone worked to make it look so real – and so easy. It wasn't. I'm just glad I got through mine dance numbers without looking silly or like an amateur. I had fun doing this movie, and I'm confident people will have fun with it, too."
