article imageOp-Ed: Trump's big announcement — Publicity stunt or distraction tactic

By Greta McClain     Oct 24, 2012 in World
New York - Despite all the speculation and media hype, Donald Trump's "devastating" bombshell appears to be nothing more than another publicity stunt, or a way to deflect attention from Tuesday's surprising announcement about Trump.
On Monday, Trump announced he would be dropping a "bombshell" about President Obama, saying: "I have something very, very big concerning the president of the United States. It's very big, bigger than anybody would know."
On Wednesday, the "big announcement" came in the form of a YouTube video in which Trump says he will donate $5 million to a charity of President Obama's choice if the president releases his college transcripts and passport.
In the video, Trump says President Obama is the least transparent president in the history of this country. He then refers to the President's birth certificate, and then asks for Obama's college applications and records, as well as his passport applications.
One can only wonder why Trump did not make the same offer to Gov. Romney and request the release of Romney's tax records.
Trump's "big" announcement came less than 24 hours after he and the Trump Organization received surprising news of their own.
On Tuesday, the man who has perhaps become best well known in recent years for uttering the words "your fired" on his The Apprentice television show was fired himself. The board of Trump Place condominiums fired the Trump Organization as managers of the property. According to The Real Deal, Trump and his company were fired in favor of allowing AKAM Living Services to take over as the property managers.
Sonja Talesnik, general counsel for the Trump Organization, told The Real Deal:
“We certainly would have been willing to discuss the concerns of the board if they had contacted us. They gave us no indication that they were looking to change managing agents.”
The Examiner is reporting that the Trump Place board members gave the Trump Organization several years to improve their service, however the board did not feel that the service had improved to their satisfaction. The Examiner report also states that Trump was notified last week that since his contract with the condominiums had expired, his services would no longer be required. The board had not met and voted yet however. It was not long after Trump was notified of the possible firing that he began hinting about his "big announcement".
Last year Trump hinted at a possible run at the presidency just as ratings for The Apprentice began to decline and the show was up for renewal. Many chalked it up to nothing more than a publicity stunt. When he jumped on the "birther" bandwagon, the ratings for his television show immediately began to rise according to a CBS report.
Whatever the reason for the faux "big announcement", it appears to be yet another example of the lengths Trump will go to remain in the media spotlight.
