Seeking to make a social statement on the nature of toys marketed to young girls, UK-based artist Darren Cullen has created 'Baby's First Baby' - a pregnant baby doll.
The one off creation, to be exhibited at an art show in the
Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art in Sunderland (UK), also boasts that "Baby's Baby is Pregnant Too!" and comes with an apparently pregnant foetus.
Several news sources have reported on the doll, including
Gizmodo which called it "horrifically awful",
Buzzfeed which went with "creepy" and
Dangerous Minds who assumed "some kind of statement about glamorizing teen pregnancies."
The artist commented on his website
spellingmistakescostlives.com that
"toys intrinsically train girls to have and care for children while they are still only children themselves. If you look in any toy catalogue the girls section is wall-to-wall babies and prams, make-up kits, kitchen sets and hoovers." Adding "We complain that children are growing up too quick, getting pregnant too early, when the only toys we give them teach kids to act like adults and prepare to have babies."
The doll is currently for sale on homemade marketplace site
Etsy for a cool £950 ($1570).
