article imageFor the creators of 'The League' art hilariously imitates life Special

By Earl Dittman     Oct 12, 2012 in Entertainment
Jeff + Jackie Marcus Schaffer, the husband & wife team behind the Fantasy Football cable comedy 'The League,' admit they use many of their own life experiences for storylines on the comedic series that practically every NFL player wants to be a part of.
For the husband and wife team of Jeff and Jackie Marcus Schaffer – co-creators, executive producers, writers and directors of the laugh-filled cable series The League – many of their own life experiences often end up as storylines for the riotous comedy that takes a full-contact look at the hyper-competitive, hysterically unrestrained world of fantasy football (which began its fourth season on October 11). "A good example of that is, last season, Jackie and I were out at a restaurant, and we were working on stories and just talking. Jackie started to have a drink of water and was sort of choking, and I was kind of saying, 'Are you okay?'" recalls Jeff Schaffer, whose résumé includes several Emmy Award nominations for his previous work on Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld. "But as I was asking her I noticed that there were TV screens all around us and ESPN was on. So, my eyes darted from her choking to the TV, and she goes, 'Were you watching TV while I was choking?' And I said, 'No way. I was not.' I swore up and down that I wasn't, but I'm thinking to myself, 'That's a funny idea, so we should put it down on our idea list.'
"After that, I didn't think anything of it," he continues. "But, one day, Jackie's looking through the idea list and she reads out loud, 'Kevin (Stephen Rannazzisi) looked at the TV while Jenny (Katie Aselton) is choking. Jackie looks at me and shouts, 'You did! You were looking at ESPN while I was choking to death. I knew it!" I didn't realize I had totally ratted myself out by putting it on the big list of ideas," Jeff says with a chuckle. "Sometimes, the fact that Jackie and I work together and live together and have a family together does all sort of complicate each other.

"But, it's true that a lot of the stuff in the show gets taken from our own lives," the male half of The League power couple confesses. “For instance, this season Kevin and Jenny have a new baby, and Jackie and I also have a new baby, so we're sort of just pulling directly from our lives,” he reveals. “Sometimes, it gets complicated. I think we're hoping that we're not as crazy parents as Kevin and Jenny, but it's been wild.”
However, Jackie Marcus Schaffer is quick to emphasize that The League is far from being even a semi-autobiographical look into their real lives. "When you watch the Season Four premiere episode ('Training Camp'), it's pretty obvious, to everyone who knows us, that the stories are not autobiographical," explains Jackie, who has produced such hit films as Disturbia and Eurotrip. "I was a woman who was pregnant when I was writing the show, but when you see 'Training Camp' all the things that Jenny does as a pregnant woman are not the things that Jackie Schaffer did as a pregnant woman. I imagine that some things would be funny to see as a pregnant woman. But, I did not actually do them all myself. I just want to set the record straight. on that. While we might have heard of, seen or experienced some of the situations that appear on the show, The League is not the story of our lives -- at least, most of it isn't."

The fictional characters of The League are a tight crew of long-time buddies, but that doesn't stop an all-out blitz of trash-talking, deceit and ruthless extortion. Their obsession with winning the highly coveted, yet utterly absurd Shiva Bowl championship trophy impacts their careers, sex lives, families and above all – their dignity. "Every season, we always start out with twenty stories: that's how we write each episode, thinking, 'What's a funny thing for Kevin to do? What's a good Pete story? What's a good Ruxin story?'" Jeff explains. "We always start with just good straight comedy stories, but then we always try to mix things into them. I think the good episodes always mix in some of the fantasy football aspect, because that's what these guys really care about – it's their obsession. Their obsession is about this little thing, but treating it like it's a big thing, is the heart of the show."
The League features an ensemble cast of rising actors/comedians that includes Mark Duplass (Humpday) as Pete, the perennial league champ who is struggling to become an adult. Stephen Rannazzisi (Paul Blart: Mall Cop) is Kevin, a happily married father and commissioner of the league. Nick Kroll (Get Him to the Greek) plays Ruxin, who believes he is the smartest of the group but can't figure out how exactly the other guys are screwing him over. Andre, played by Paul Scheer (NTSF:SD:SUV), has continued to be the punching bag of the group since their high school days – a fact that hasn’t changed despite the fact he is now a successful plastic surgeon. Jon Lajoie is Taco, Kevin’s little brother, a part-time musician and full-time stoner with little interest in fantasy football other than hanging with his buddies (whom he struggles to remember). Katie Aselton (The Freebie) plays Jenny, Kevin’s wife and his better half – especially when it comes to fantasy football.

"The fun thing about doing The League is that each of the actors is so great and has such a distinctive voice that there's never any question about which character is going to be the main subject of an episode when we're writing," Jeff says. "It's like, 'Oh, is this a Taco story or a Ruxin story?' The writing even gets easier when we are on the set. It's like these guys are so brilliant, and they have such a great grasp of their character and how their character fits into the group dynamic, that we generate so much fun material just on the way they interact with each other in between some of the lines that are in the outline. Paul Scheer is amazing. It's such an amazing skill that he can do, which is always being insulted. He defends himself in a way that just gives them so much more to say. He knows how to be insulted better than anybody I've ever seen in my life. He's always so amazing, especially the work he did last season."

In The League: The Complete Season Three (now available on Blu-ray and DVD), the craziness kicks off as Kevin and Jenny have a run-in with a local drug dealer, and Pete regrets learning a new sexual position. Ruxin hires a hot new au pair, but does Taco have his eyes on her end zone? The race to the playoffs is on – but who wins the Shiva Bowl trophy, and who gets the dreaded Sacko? In addition to several NFL star athletes, Season Three features guest appearances by actors such as Seth Rogen, Jeff Goldblum, Sarah Silverman and Eliza Dushku. The Schaffers admit that in the current season of The League, fans of the show can expect to see even more celebrities (Robert Wagner, Tim Olyphant, J.B. Smoove, Ryan Hanson, Jeff Goldblum and Julia Duffy, to name just a few) pop up on the show, as well as countless cameo appearances from the who's who of NFL team players.

"There are a lot of NFL players who want to be on the show, and the challenge for us is writing them in in a believable way," Jeff explains. "One of the nice things that's happened this year with Kevin and Jenny having a baby and them living in Chicago is that Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler, the quarterback for the Chicago Bears, have also just had a child. In the fourth show of the new season, the Cutler baby – or as we call him the 'Cutlet' – is going to be featured very prominently. So, Kristin and Jay are using that kid. That kid had basically one free day on this earth before being used as a pawn for our show," he jokingly adds.

According to the Schaffers, there is a long list of NFL players dying to snag an appearance on The League. Die-hard fans of football themselves, the pair often as if they are getting the opportunity to live out their wildest football fantasies by being able to fraternize with the players who want to be on the show.” The athletes are easy to get, because the athletes are all fans,” Jackie declares proudly. “Last night, at the premiere party, it was amazing, because we were there with a couple of NFL players, and those guys were just texting some of the athletes who are on our show. Actually, in the middle of the premiere party, Barry Sanders started tweeting at us, ‘Why didn't you guys invite me to be on the show?' For Jeff and I – who are giant football fans who love the sport so much – to be in the middle of a great night like The League/It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia premiere party and to be getting tweets from Barry Sanders saying, ‘Why aren't I there? It looks fun,’ as we were live tweeting at the premiere, was one of the coolest things I've ever experienced.”

With so many NFL players vying for a spot on The League, Jeff and Jackie admit they’ve already had to turn down several gridiron rising stars. “We’ve only had to say no, because we have no space,” Jackie candidly admits. “I mean there's a lot of players who want to do the show that we're talking to who we'd like to have on the show, but frankly you have to write a believable story. I mean, some of these guys don't even work in the NFL,yet."
“Right, it's not our list,” Jeff interjects. “For example, there are five schmoos in Chicago who want to be on, but we always try to make sure that when they're on – the NFL players are in for a good reason. But, there's a long list of firstround fantasy football picks who want to be on the show, and we'd love to have them. We just have to figure out how.”

At the proverbial end of the day, Jeff credits his wife with the continued success of The League. “Jackie is the best,” he proclaims. “First of all, she's the best producer I've ever, ever, ever worked with. She is amazingly resourceful because this show is made for not a lot of money. It's basically the independent movie version of a TV show, and there's nothing that she can't do. I mean, she was in labor and dealing with RG3, Trent Richardson, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Desean Jackson at the same time.
“The opening scene of this season’s premiere, that NFL draft, we shot on July 10th because all those players were in town,” he remembers. “We were supposed to have our (first) baby on July 27th but she went into labor on July 9th, right before we were getting ready to start filming. You don't know what commitment really is until you've seen someone going through contractions and deal with prepping a shoot. It is incredible. The League wouldn’t work without her. That’s my gal, and I’m glad she’s on my team.”

Strangers On A Train
It starts with the shriek of a train whistle...and ends with shrieking excitement. Before anyone thought of "throwing Momma from the train," the idea of a double "crisscross" murder had already been hatched. Or "hitched," as in Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers On A Train. Tennis star Guy Haines (Farley Granger) half-jokingly muses about killing his wife with a stranger he meets on a train, unhinged playboy Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker), who'd prefer his father be deceased. In theory, each could murder the other's victim. Crisscross. No motive. No clues. No problem... except: Bruno takes the idea seriously, with deadly consequences. Whether you're a fan of Hitchcock or just brilliant filmmaking, this diabolical tale of twisting suspense and macabre humor, costarring Ruth Roman and Hitchcock stalwarts Leo G. Caroll and the director's daughter, Patricia Hitchcock, is your ideal carnival ride. Snorks: The Complete First Season
This month, the is releasing the first season of 80’s cartoon series Snorks, from animation powerhouse Hanna-Barbara, on DVD. Fans of classic animation, or anyone who watched Saturday morning cartoons, are sure to enjoy the first season of the 80’s cartoon series Snorks -- about a race of multicolored underwater creatures. The series features veteran voice actor Michael Bell (The Smurfs, Tangled) as the show’s resident hero “Allstar Seaworthy.” "I first discovered Captain Ortega's logbook in a monastery that overlooks the sea. On the morning of February 13, 1634, Captain Ortega anchored his ship behind a barrier reef. That night, they were attacked by pirates. The ship, set afire, sank into the lagoon. Ten days later, the captain was found, delirious, still clutching his logbook. He described a world of tiny, underwater creatures no bigger than his thumb. No one believed him, but you know, there's something about Captain Ortega's story…that makes me believe it's true!" It’s true, all right – just ask the Snorks! In their steam-powered city carved out of coral, these multi-colored denizens of the deep have whale-sized hearts and are up for any challenge – or party – the ocean might send their way. So come along with Allstar, Casey, Daffney, Dimmy, Junior and Tooter as they explore life within – and sometimes beyond – the limits.
