After complaining that he had not heard from his wife in nearly two years, Eduardo R was released on a prison furlough and upon returning home, found his wife's mummified body there to greet him.
Eduardo told authorities in September 2011 that he had not talked to his wife in over a year. Neighbors of the Ciempozuelos Spain couple had complained of a foul odor coming from the residence as well. TruTV states that local police and the Civil Guard had petitioned a judge to allow them to enter the home to check on Angeles Fernandez, Eduardo's wife.
Government officials state that the judge denied the requests due to reports of Angeles Fernandez’ last known physical appearance. According to a Fox New Latino officials stated: “The lack of hygiene … (of) Angeles Fernandez, on the last occasions that she was seen, were evident and so it was not ruled out that these smells were produced by lack of hygiene inside the home.”
The judge also stated that even the husband did not have authorization to enter the home ‘since he did not have a relationship with his wife due to his situation of serving a sentence" according to the Daily Mail.
Fernandez' body showed no signs of violent trauma, but an autopsy is planned so a cause of death can be determined.
