In case of the war in Syria once again spilling over the border the NATO military has vowed to defend the Turkish state.
The Secretary-General of the organization Anders Fogh Rasmussen stated in Brussels that NATO hopes that a solution will be found that will stop border clashes and an escalation in present Syria-Turkey tensions. (Reports Reuters and RTE News among others).
Mr. Rasmussen furthermore added that NATO is, "Taking in account the situation at our southeastern border, we have taken the steps necessary to make sure that we have all plans in place to protect and defend Turkey."
The current tense relationship between neighbouring Turkey and Syria stems from an incident that took place last week when Syrian shells "strayed" across the volatile international border and killed five Turkish civilians.
