article imageGary Glitter to be questioned in Jimmy Savile investigation

By Steve Hayes
Oct 8, 2012 in World
Gary Glitter may be arrested over claims that he raped a 13 year old girl in Jimmy Savile's BBC dressing room. Gary Glitter, previously convicted of child pornography offences and molesting young girls, is likely to be questioned by police.
Earlier this week, Karin Ward told ITV News that she had been abused by Jimmy Savile. She said she and other girls were taken from Duncroft Approved School for Girls to Savile's dressing room at the BBC Television Centre. Ward told ITV News that Gary Glitter raped a 13 year old girl, whilst Jimmy Savile groped a 14 year old.
According to the Daily Mail, an unnamed source stated that Glitter will almost certainly be questioned by the police, who know the identity of the alleged rape victim. The source said:
These are very serious offences and as long as the woman gives evidence to the police there is a very good chance Glitter will be nicked.
Gary Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, has a history of paedophile offences. He was found guilty of possessing child pornography in 1999 and of molesting two girls, aged ten and eleven, in 2006. As late as 2009, as the Telegraph notes, Jimmy Savile was still defending Glitter, claiming he had done nothing wrong, "just sat at home watching dodgy films".
Gary Glitter had a long and very successful career as a pop star. One of his most famous recordings was the 1973 hit, "I'm The Leader Of The Gang (I Am)". The lyric makes chilling reading in the light of subsequent revelations:
Come on, come on, Come on, come on, Come on, come on, Come on (2x)
D'you wanna be in my gang , my gang, my gang, D'you wanna be in my gang, Oh Yeah! (2x)
I'm the leader, I'm the leader, I'm the leader of the gang I am
I'm the leader, I'm the leader, Well there's no one like the man I'm
I can take you high as a kite every single night
I can make you jump out of bed standing on my head
Who'd ever believe it, Come on come on (3x)
D'you wanna be in my gang, a my gang, my gang, (2x)
D'you wanna be in my gang, a my gang, my gang, oh Yeah! Do You ? my gang,
Come On! Come on, come on, Come on, come on, Come on, come on, (2x)
D'you wanna be in my gang , my gang, my gang,
D'you wanna be in my gang, Oh Yeah!
D'you wanna be in my gang , my gang, my gang, D'you wanna be in my gang, Oh Yeah!
I'm the leader, I'm the leader, I'm the leader of the gang I am
I'm the leader, I'm the leader, I'm the man who put the bang in gang
I can take you over the hill, ooooh what a thrill
I can make you sell me your soul for my rock and roll
Who'd ever believe it, Come on come on (3x)
D'you wanna be in my gang, a my gang, my gang, (2x)
D'you wanna be in my gang, a my gang, my gang, oh Yeah!
Do You ? my gang Come On!
This morning on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, the BBC's Director-General acceded to increasing demands to hold an inquiry in the Savile scandal. However, he qualified this by saying it would not happen until the police had completed any investigations they may undertake.
