article imageJulianne Hough pays homage to '80s music in 'Rock Of Ages' Special

By Earl Dittman     Oct 5, 2012 in Entertainment
The former 'Dancing With The Stars' regular & 'ET' reporter is now a full-time actress and hit-making country singer who let her hair down to rock out with Tom Cruise & Mary J. Blige in the cinematic tribute to hair-band hits of the '80s - 'Rock Of Ages.'
Although Julianne Hough has spent the better part of her 24 years dancing professionally -- culminating in being crowned half of a winning dance duo on Season Four (with partner Olympic medal winner Apolo Ohno) and Season Five (alongside Indianapolis 500 champ Helio Castroneves) of the hit reality series Dancing With The Stars -- when it came to performing the pole-dancing sequences in the '80s music-filled romantic comedy Rock Of Ages, the classically-trained dancer, actress and country singer came to the instant realization that she really didn't know everything there is to know about the art of body movement. "When I first read about the pole-dancing in the script, I thought, 'What a breeze,' but boy, was I wrong, it was ass-kickin' tough," laughingly recalls Hough (pronounced 'huff'), the actress who landed the female leadrole in Rock Of Ages.

"I thought it was just going to be a lot of bumping and grinding on a pole," the former Entertainment Tonight correspondent continues. "But then, I come to find out that there’s like actual upper body strength that you need to have to do it justice. Even though my arms were totally ripped, it was still rough. After being on that pole for a while, I ended up with bruises everywhere, all along my inner thighs, and with a lot of sore muscles. But, when it was all done, I was so happy I got the chance to learn something new and made it work. Now, when I watch the movie, every time I see those girls up on the stage -- the pole specialists -- I have to clap and cheer, because they are working their butts off for something that looks easy. There was one girl that like walks down the air, and like backwards and hanging on to one hand, and I looked at her and just thought, 'This is absolutely incredible, but I couldn't ever do that.' So, I can't emphasize it enough -- it was tough!"
Outfitted in an eye-catching black and white designer jumpsuit, daintily sipping on her glass of morning orange juice with a straw, Hough prepares for our chat by making herself comfortable and cozy in an oversized arm chair that occupies her massive hotel suite at the swank, upscale Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. The one-time Salt Lake City, Utah-native admits that the handful of bruises and sore muscles she contracted during filming, combined with a rigorous shooting schedule and watching some of her favorite scenes end up on the cutting floor, was all worth it because it gave her the chance to work with mega-star Tom Cruise and soul music diva Mary J. Blige in Rock Of Ages (available October 9 on Blu-ray Combo pack, DVD and for download). "I really love this movie, and I am so happy and honored that I got to be a part of it," gushes Hough, who also starred in the recent Footloose reboot. "I was able to act with some of my own idols, which sometimes seemed unbelievable. It has been the most rewarding experience of my life and career," she added, during our sit down talk this past June.

Directed by Adam Shankman (Hairspray) from a screenplay by actor/writer Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder), Rock Of Ages (which is loosely based on the Broadway hit) tells the story of small town girl Sherrie (Hough) and big city boy Drew (Diego Boneta), young hopefuls who meet at the Bourbon Room on the Sunset Strip, while pursuing their Hollywood dreams of becoming famous singers. Their rock 'n' roll romance is told through the heart-pounding 1980's hits of artists and bands such as Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison and Whitesnake. In addition to Hough, Boneta, Cruise and Blige Rock Of Ages features an impressive, all-star cast that also includes Alec Baldwin, Bryan Cranston, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Malin Ackerman. At its core, Rock of Ages is a love story that celebrates big dreams and loud drums.
"I think that (director) Adam Shankman did this movie right, so there doesn’t need to be anymore ’80s movies, right?" Hough answers with a huge grin, when asked about the dozens of '80s rock and pop hit songs used in Rock Of Ages. "I think the music is so incredible. The melodies from the ’80s are what really made the songs so iconic and classic. I wish there would be more melodies like that today in music. Look, I’m not dogging on non-melodic pop music, because I love it. But I’m just saying that’s why the timeless songs we use in the movie are still here -- because of the melodies."

Rock Of Ages is also a success due to the talent of the actors who sing the twenty-something-year-old chart hits. While Hough performs such numbers as "Here I Go Again" and "Harden My Heart," Tom Cruise -- who portrays the iconic, fictional rock star Stacee Jaxx -- belts out rockers like "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and "Wanted: Dead Or Alive." While Rock Of Ages marks Cruise's first time singing onscreen in a major motion picture, Hough speculates that Cruise could have been a major music idol if he had not chosen acting as his profession. "Tom was born to be a rock god," she declares. "I would have loved to have seen him actually sing in the ’80s, as someone like Stacee Jaxx, because I think that he would have been the most sought-after rock star of the ’80s -- if he would have decided to make records."
One of Hough favorite scenes with Cruise in the film was actually cut from the finished theatrical version. "'Rock You Like A Hurricane' was a duet that I did with Tom, and it is a bad freaking ass song," she reveals. "And, when I say 'ass,' I literally mean ass. This was like the sexiest but roughest performance I did in the movie. And, I think it was a little bit too much for the audience. I think that people, especially women, didn’t really like my character, Sherrie, after that. So they cut it out. But it will be on DVD for sure. I like to say it’s a musical lap dance. I mean, if you take out the music, it’s a little…but with the music, there we were, singing and dancing. It was the most physical dancing that I saw Tom do. I really can’t wait for the world to see that, too. He was amazing." (Hough and Cruise's sensual interpretation of "Rock You Like A Hurricane" appears on the Rock Of Ages Blu-ray and DVD, in an extended version of the film).

Consequently, Cruise wasn't the only superstar that Hough enjoyed acting and singing alongside. In the film, hit soul-music songstress Mary J. Blige plays Justice Charlier, the realistic and tough-as-nails owner of the stripper palace, The Venus Club, who becomes a friend and confidante to Sherrie. In Rock Of Ages, the pair perform "Shadows Of The Night," "Harden My Heart" and "Any Way You Want It" together. During filming with Blige, Hough jokes that she had to pinch herself to ensure she wasn't hallucinating. "I mean, yes, I was star struck to work with Tom Cruise, but there was also this overwhelming nervousness that I had when I would sing with Mary J.," Hough explains. "Honestly, I don’t think there’s anybody who is as influential in, especially R&B music, as Mary J. has been. I think the coolest part about working with her was that we were on set for hours in a strip club, right. So, a lot of the times we weren’t being used, because they were shooting the other dancer, so we would just hang together."
During their breaks inbetween filming The Venus Club scenes from Rock Of Ages, art would imitate life by transforming Hough and Blige from fictional to real-life friends. "There was a lot of down time, and somehow, we just bonded, and I mean we’re really close," Hough confesses. "Even though we are not working together on the film anymore, Mary J. still calls and leaves me messages, out of the blue, all the time. She’s like, 'I just want to let you know that I love you so much, Julianne, and you are so amazing.' She just boosts my confidence every day. She’s like, 'I’m here for you, whether I’m your friend, your sister, your aunt or your mom. Whatever you want me to be, I’ll be.' I'm so glad I was able to find a close friend like Mary J. because of this movie. It really is like a dream come true for me."

Hough's own life story and rise to fame sounds a wee bit like a Cinderella, wishes-come-true tale in itself. "After I left Utah, I had $2,000 dollars in my pocket when I came to LA," she remembers. "I told my dad I had $5,000 so I could move out here. My rent was $800 dollars a month, so it was not a lot of money. That was one month’s worth, basically. But I was lucky. Everything that I went out for, whether it was booking a commercial or doing something with choreography, I just knew I had to get it, otherwise, I’d have to go home. So, I just always, somehow, got a job, and I worked really hard for it. I remember I lived with a bunch of models, and they would do a job and get like ten grand, and I’d be like, 'This sucks.' They wouldn’t work for a month afterwards. They would just be in their pajamas from when I left, and when I came home they’d still be in their pajamas. Of course, I’d be working and auditioning and everything. I thought they were so lucky and everything. But, it just made me push harder. It was hard, and I was working my butt off, but it always paid off."
After years of struggling, Hough says she finally felt like she had made it and had become a real part of the Hollywood community when she landed a gig as a dancing partner to the stars on television. "I feel like just being a part of the Dancing With The Stars family and being able to breath easy for a while was the break I needed," she admits. After dancing with various celebrities for several seasons, Hough quit, only to return to the reality show as a contestant and a featured performer. "I think the first time that I came back from not being a regular dancer on the show, and I had to perform as a singer and as an actress and be on the show, that started everything for me. That was kind of the moment where I was like, 'Holy cow, I feel like I’m actually a part of not just a reality show, but a part of Hollywood.' Actually, I mean, as a part of the entertainment world, I should say."

Hough and Cruise exchange a kiss in 'Rock Of Ages'
Warner Bros.
She officially left Dancing With The Stars as a regular in 2008 to pursue a career in music -- not as a rock 'n' roller, but as a country artist. Upon its release, the next year, her self-titled debut album, Juilanne Hough, would head straight to the top of the country charts and land at the Number #3 position on Billboard's Top 100. She toured with Brad Paisley and Jewel, recorded a Christmas EP and won an Academy of Country Music (ACM) award for Best Female Vocalist of 2009. "I've always loved singing country music, but when I started making records, I never thought I would do so well, so quickly," Hough admits. "I was floored when I won (the ACM), but afterwards, I kind of had to step back and reassess my entire career and make sure I was giving every facet of it my very best."
Last year, during the filming of Rock Of Ages, the ACM-winner found the time to record her follow-up to Julianne Hough. "I have a second record completely done, but we’ll see when that comes out," she says. "I say that because I want to be able to give the right time and commitment it takes to promote the album the way it does for a movie. So, when it’s the right time, it'll be released. If I had to guess, I would say it should be out sometime this year."

When it comes to her acting career, for her next two films -- Lasse Hallstrom's Safe Haven and The Untitled Diablo Cody Project -- Julianne no longer has to sing and dance in addition to speaking her lines. For the pair of upcoming motion pictures, Hough gets to show off her pure, raw acting talents. "I actually just finished another film with Russell (Brand), which was Diablo Cody’s directorial debut, and I don't have dance in that or Safe Haven," she confesses. "Look, I just love to entertain. I mean, dancing is a part of my life, and when I don’t dance, I feel like there’s something missing because I’m such a physical person who loves to express myself through dance. But I also love to act, I love to sing, I love to entertain. So, if I’m passionate about a certain project, then I want to do it. So, I hope to stretch my acting skills with these two new movies.
"Honestly, I got to a point in my dancing where I felt like I did so much hard work and I achieved a lot of great things that I wanted to try something els," Hough adds. "But, I wanted to make sure I put that same kind of commitment that I put into my dancing into something that I was also passionate about --acting. So, I’ve had so many opportunities with my dance, but now I’m just excited to get better as an actress."
