Protesting shipyard workers that have not received any wages for six months, stormed the Ministry of Defense in Athens, on Thursday.
Unpaid workers from the Skaramangas Shipyards demanded to see Defense Minister Panos Panayiotopoulos, who was not in Athens. Ta Nea reported that of 1,100 employees, 160 have not been paid for three years while the rest remain unpaid for six months.
Members of the coalition of the extreme left, SYRIZA, and the Communist KKE, joined the protesters in support.
According to Ekathimerini the workers stormed the Ministry of Defense compound in protest, and riot police were duly called to deal with them.
As protesters clashed with riot police tear gas was used. Dozens of protesters were arrested for resisting authority. Meanwhile a number of protesters moved to demonstrate the arrest of their colleagues outside police headquarters on Alexandras Avenue, where more angry clashes ensued.
To Vima reported Deputy Minister of Defence Demetris Elefsiniotis has agreed to meet a delegation of the workers if they calm down.
