Ukrainian feminists from the infamous group FEMEN, notorious for staging topless protests, have opened a global headquarters and "boot camp" in Paris.
The new FEMEN center is situated in the Parisian neighborhood of Goutte d'Or, a poor and largely Muslim area, where bare breasts will be certain to raise eyebrows. The center is sited on the same street as a mosque and an Islamic cultural centre.
Two Ukrainian activists, Inna Shevchenko and Oksana Shachko, founded the center and hope to use it to train new recruits. The Moscow Times reported 30 Frenchwomen have so far joined the Ukrainians. French activist Eloise Bouton said:
"There will be physical training: how to run, how to fall down. Also emotional, psychological training: how to act under stress, how to act in custody. The Ukrainians are really used to this."
Femen also plan to offer "philosophical discussions and language classes in French, English and Russian."
One of Femen's first protests in Paris was a topless demonstration "under the Venus de Milo statue inside Paris's Louvre to protest against rape" according to the Guardian.
