A 17-year-old girl suffered from heart failure due to an infection that she may have picked up when she had her ears pierced a year earlier.
Jess smith, now 17, went to her doctors last year when she was having pains in her chest. Her GP told her that this was because of a spot of indigestion, according to Daily Mail.
However, within days of that visit she ended up going to the hospital where she underwent emergency open-heart surgery that took around seven hours to complete.
According to Telegraph, the surgery was necessary because she was told, by another doctor, that she was just days from death.
According to Express, Smith was diagnosed with endocarditis, which is caused when bacteria gets into the bloodstream.
Smith said that she thinks she may have got the infection when she went to get her ears pierced. She said that she may have also got the infection when she had a brace. She said that the doctors are not sure where she picked up the infection and they will never know.
