While several factors including competition forces tech-gadget companies to slash or hike prices, the reasons why Apple decided to slash iPhone 4s and iPhone 4 prices in India is not known.
According to news reports, the iPhone 4s 16GB model is now available at a reduced price of INR 41,400 from the original INR 44,500, while iPhone 4 8GB price is reduced by nearly INR 9,600 to INR 28,300.
However, the official Airtel site continues to show the unrevised price of iPhone 4s 16GB. Nevertheless, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 for 16 and 32 GB are shown out of stock. The company also announced that iPhone5 is coming soon.
According to unsubstantiated reports the launch could be as soon as within a month. There were also reports that some of the companies like Aircel, Vodafone and Airtel have placed orders for nano-SIM cards to be used in the iPhone 5.
The iPhone is expected to cost nearly INR 50,000 (approximately $1000). According to unofficial reports, iPhone 5 has already hit in the grey market stores at the cost of approx INR 76,000 (16GB), INR 85,000 (32GB), and INR 100,000 (64 GB).
The iPhone 5 is expected to be available in nearly 100 countries by the year end. Currently, it is available in the U.S, Australia, the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore.
Recently, Apple won a suit against Samsung. Michael Risch, patent law professor, Villanova University had remarked at the time, “This is a snapshot moment in time. Samsung has deep pockets and they are going to change some designs up. They are going to have to change some features that make things, but maybe they will come up with something better.”
