The Ukranian girls are an extreme answer to the body-mod culture
with their unsettling preoccupation with what CNet
describes as "unrealistic body image," and The Huffington Post
, "bizarre hyperbolic character imitation."
The Internet is simply captivated by Anastasiya Shpagina's
attempt to force her appearance into the fantasy body ideal of Japanese animation characters with large eyes, disproportionately large heads and wispy waists. And she is gaining plenty of attention online as the "real-life anime girl." The Huffington Post
reports Shpagina is carving out an Internet niche for herself with her Facebook
page having received over 12,000 likes and her "Flower Fairy"
tutorial video (see above
), over a million views on YouTube.
reports that her "Flower Fairy" video shows how she transforms through makeup into a replica of female anime carton characters.
The Daily Mail
reports she has a huge following in Japan and that in acknowledgment of the fact, she has taken up a Japanese name, Fukkacumi.
, similarly, came to online attention this year as the real-life Barbie doll. The fame of both girls is growing. While Shpagina's Facebook page now has over 12,000 likes, Lukyanova, the Barbie girl, has almost 500,000.
Recently, Shpagina posted a photo of herself with Lukyanova in a wooded park with the caption "Another one with Valeria" (see photo below
Some people are fascinated while others feel revolted by the extreme self-transformation the two girls are able to achieve. According to Enstarz.com
, a viewer of the photos on Facebook, said: "Non human humanoid robots ;) gorgeous ones though."
also reports a lengthy disapproving comment by a viewer of the photos on Facebook:
"All I see is the objectification of women into the plastic, lifeless, submissive roles that a male dominated society would LOVE us all to follow... You are probably intelligent women underneath this persona, why not utilize your skills to a bigger goal/ project?"
But evidently, both girls have already found the "bigger goal/project" of their choice. Shpagina, at 5 feet 2 inches, and 85 pounds body weight was made in heaven for the role she has taken up. The Daily Mail
reports she deliberately slimmed down to just over six stone in attempt to resemble a living anime character. She once said she spends up to 30 minutes carefully applying make-up to each one of her eyes for the anime self-transformation she covets.
And the obsession gets weirder still: She is allegedly considering cosmetic surgery....
